Fixed my dryer

Bought the dryer used 19 yrs ago. It was making a bad thunking sound. Since I have previously replaced one of the rubber wheels on which the drum rides, I figured that was the problem. Sure enough, one of the rubber wheels, which just rides on a metal bushing on a metal shaft was ovaled out. $26 for a new set of wheels, an hours work, and I'm back in business with a spare wheel in reserve. Hoping for another 19 yrs.
There has to be a hell of a profit margin on dryers because there's not much too them.

It's amazing.......a timer, a drum, a motor, and an electric element. $500.........thank you very much.........morons rule.

Fixed mine a couple years ago. The hardest was figuring out which panel to take off for the right access. After 3 tries I found it :D.

Yep. Even though I had replaced a wheel in the past, it took me a while to figure out how to access the wheels. I first took off the back panel--no. Pop up the top panel and remove the front panel was the proper procedure for mine.

I was a bit baffled on how to replace the belt on the driers many years ago.......before I realized that the entire machine needs to be dismantled and the drum has to come out. It's only 30 minutes once you know all the screw placements.......but, I'll bet the techs clean up on this job.

I swear some people buy those $1,000 dryers as a status symbol.

See post #2......last statement.

The heating element is relatively easy too, and cheap if you find it on eBay.

Five hundred? I'm talking a THOUSAND BUCKS!

I've actually been just hanging our clothes out to dry. Got a nice drying rack from IKEA and we use mostly wool or synthetics.

New Motor

'Had to put a new motor on the 26 year old model in the laundry room.
'Local appliance supply warehouse had it in stock. $25.00 USD.

Thats nothing, did you see the Bosch ones for north of a G note?:D They have a pretty case.

When you can your better off hanging up your cloths to dry, they get less wrinkles and last longer. Thats what I do in the summer.

TheDon 02-15-2009 08:16 PM

dude... I was at lowes and they have some stoves that are $3k... Its a double stove with ball bearing racks that slide out, LED lights, etc etc..

vwbuge 02-15-2009 08:20 PM

I have fixed our dryer twice and the washer once since we have been in our house.

Hatterasguy 02-15-2009 08:22 PM

Good stoves cost a lot more than that...$10k-$15k. I have been in houses where the owners spent the better part of $30k...on the fridge and stove...

Those built in Viking fridge's suck though, my friend has one and it breaks all the time.

Our frigidair fridge isnt the biggest but its stainless steel and keeps food refrigerated.

Pure BS. All you need is a heat source and something to cook.

Dutch oven, griddle, grill grate, open fire.

iwrock 02-15-2009 08:34 PM

The SubZero in our house died, so we replaced it with an LG.

Appliances cost some serious moola.... Whats wrong with $500 washer and dryer combos?

Yep, and the kicker is most of them never use the stove...they go out to eat all the time...so the $15k stove is used by the kids to heat up soup or something.

I'm liking the currant offerings from LG. We have an LG fridge in our house, and one we just built went with all LG in the kitchen. The prices are reasonable and the quality seems pretty good.

Show kitchens. Been there done that! :D

It's crazy man. You walk into these dream kitchens and all the maid does is polish the copper. Freakin' spotless stuff that's never ever been used.

kerry 02-15-2009 08:40 PM

My kitchen gas stove was manufactured around 1920. Still works fine and will do for another 100yrs.

Hatterasguy 02-15-2009 08:42 PM

Yep it is crazy, the bathrooms are the same way. Everyone wants those massive jacuzzi tubs these days in the new houses...what they forget are that they take forever to fill...so they are never used.

Were doing a custom build now and the lady made a smart move, insted of a GD uselss jacuzzi she got a very nice stand alone bath tub. Far more usefull, IMHO.

Kuan 02-15-2009 08:43 PM

What I want is an outdoor wood burning sauna and hot tub.

The LG was the expensive side (if I remember right), but it was better built than all the other fridges in the style we wanted. We have the one with the two doors on the top, and freezer on the bottom.

Some family friends redid their kitchen and spent megabucks on appliances. It was pointless, as I have never ever seen them use half the applainces that got installed.

The appliance specialists like to sell those, since there are nice spiffs on those, I am guessing on one that is $3k, it would be over $100...

Thats what we got, minus the external ice maker, which my mom hates. About $2,200. I think its a better fridge than my friends $10k Viking which is the same design, but a little deeper. Its certianly been more reliable.

We got that same fridge. We thought that the ice maker in the door was trouble. Something about plumbing the freezer up to the door makes me nervous. The LG is quieter than the SubZero too. The SubZero looked better though.

I would have gotten the LG fridge with the TV in it.

Hatterasguy 02-15-2009 11:29 PM

No one really watch's TV in my house. Besides it would just be something to break.

iwrock 02-15-2009 11:33 PM

We wanted the one with the TV in it, but we already have an LCD mounted in the Kitchen.... :D

The Fridge with the TV in it didnt do HD... The Kitchen LCD does 1080P. :)

raymr 02-15-2009 11:48 PM

The biggest scam now is the cabinet depth refrigerators that look massive but can't hold a thing. People I know who have them keep an old fridge in the basement for pizzas and big salad bowls, etc. It's all about looks.

"The jackass" bought one of those. What a fricken waste of money and time running a cable wire for the damn thing. The argument was "So she can watch TV while she cooks"

Here's the thing. If your preparing a proper meal, being distracted by a TV just ruins the food or makes it more likely that you'll cut your finger off.

Mistress 02-16-2009 10:23 AM

Kerry- That's great thanks for a positive thread. What kind of dryer is it?

kerry 02-16-2009 12:53 PM

It's a Kenmore. However, the model number has a 110 in front of it. The parts supplier told me that '110' indicates it was made by Whirlpool. I guess Sears does not make their own appliances.

Mistress 02-16-2009 01:28 PM

I have Whirlpool appliances in my kitchen from 18 years ago....still going strong.

I don't think that Sears actually makes anything........all of it is purchased from another company and resold in the stores. Anybody know of a Craftsman tool factory?

mgburg 02-16-2009 09:49 PM

I've replaced all three wheels holding up my dryer's drum 3 times in the 18 years I've had it...bought it used for $50.00...

The washer I bought for $50.00 used, back in '85...replaced the water-level sensor and the water-temp switch...about $15.00 and $25.00 respectively...

Now that the ex is gone...it might last another 25 years...it's only cleaning my stuff...not OURS 6 times a week....geesh, she could piss through the water, electricity and fabric-softner in no time flat...I'm still finding those little pink sheets floating about... :D

When she moved out, the electric bill dropped by $50/month...I think the meter reader came out and checked mine 'cause he thought it was broke...I told him the ex moved out...he laughed...said it happens all the time...MAJOR drop in useage when the "lil lady" ain't around... :D

lutzTD 02-16-2009 10:31 PM

yeah sears buys all the Kenmores from someone else. when I was at GE they wanted us to add an additional speed to the convection motor on our oven. when we told them the bigger motor would not fit, they said just make the off a more prominent location so it looked like the off was another speed???? we didnt sell to them in the end because they wanted too many changes and a lower price.

I agree with the LG analysis on the dryers. GE and Maytag (worked there too) just reskin old technology. We did a competetive analysis on the LG and it was top notch. Maytag gave me a project to improve the quietness of the dryer they had been making forever. It also had a problem with vents over 20 feet long. Initial investigation showed the fan was sized incorrectly for its scroll and the scroll was interupted by a big notch made to get the dryer drum tighter toward the bottom. with an improved scroll and fan blade design I was able to take out 7 decibals and improve the stall length of the vent to around 30 feet. they said OH thats nice and shelved it to continue making the 20-30 year old design until they went under

Why do you have kitchen appliances in your shoe closet?

I worked in the Whirlpool refrigerator plant in Fort Smith, AR about 28 years ago. We made Kenmore refrigerators in that factory.
