1911 experts help!

I recently aquired a colt 1911 .38 super. It was my grandfathers, my grandmother thinks he carried it when he was in the air force in the late 50s/ early 60s, but this may not be accurate. I cannot find the serial # in any of the online 1911 resources i found one for sale that had a close # that was claimed to be a 1957 production. any help would be great. the # is 6 digit 158xxx lh side says "colt super .38 automatic" with the prancing horse behind it rh side says "colts f.a. manufacturing hartford conn usa"

Thats a heck of a heirloom you've got there. As far as I'm concerned the 1911 is the best handgun going.

I carried a M1911 when I was an MP. Based on the serial number we concluded the one I was issued was older than me. I seemed kind of loose feeling if you rattled it around, but man was it accurate. I never missed Expert once when qualifying. I love shooting it. My only dissatisfaction with it was its limited capacity.

I have always liked the 1911 pistols, but it was hard to justify buying one.after much research I bought my first handgun I bought a glock because of the dependability and price at the time you couldnt get a better high cap. automatic for the money. I am sure I will love my new 1911! The glock is great, but it dosnt have much charicter.
