If you have a vanity plate on your car, can you just swap it out for the number plate without losing the vanity tag (assuming you have the vanity tag fee paid through the next year)? Just wondering ... considering going with numbers for a while but I don't want to surrender my vanity plate.

Yeah, the anonymity is what I'm aiming for ... my dad has complained for a long time that my vanity plates may draw unwanted attention to me. I'm tired of arguing, and maybe he's right, anyway. Still, my vanity plate is one I picked out with a special purpose for this car, and I don't want to let it go completely.

It's a state issue.........each would have it's own set of rules.

Knowing Delaware it probably involves a $300 fee. I'll go to the DMV tomorrow. This will be my fifth trip to the DMV this year ... pretty good for Feb. 18!

In California you can "de activate" your vanity plates, and remove them from your vehicle, whilst plating it with a standared alphanumeric issue, and at the same time, physically keep both your vanity plates until you are ready to use them again, and replate a car with them later.


In the meantime, while you have also posession of the alphanumeric "vanity" license plate, but do not use them, nobody else can use it if you keep paying the inactive fees to keep them.


The California DMV FAQ opines:


"Complete a Special Interest License Plate Application (PDF) indicating that you want to reassign the plates to another vehicle, hold the plates for future use, or release interest in the plates. If retaining the plates for future use, most plate programs require an annual retention fee. The retention fees vary by type of plate and are listed on the second page of the application. Failure to pay this annual fee will result in cancellation of the plate and possible reassignment of the configuration."







It varies by state, though, so you would need to check the applicable rules in yours.




Chronic speeders and other try to defeat the Highway Patrol with confusing personalized plate numbers, such as "MWVVWMV", and so forth.

WI is the same. There is an option to "release" the plates but I am not sure about the fees involved. There may be a maintenance fee.

I am still waiting for the prizoners to finish making my set which I applied for.
