Computer Speakers for the audiophiles
What computer speaker setup are you guys running? I had a mediocre set of Logitech 5.1s that I never really set up (i just had a mass of speakers clustered together basically). I went for a set of Klipsch 2.1s on amazon.com and they are amazing.. I can turn them up all the way without too much distortion.. the subwoofer is powerful but the bass it puts out is quite nice. I think these are a discontinued model... they've been around for quite a while. My old logitechs just sounded muddy as a Vietnamese **** field... these are so crisp. The Klipschs were around $150 shipped, -40 from a giftcard I had.
I am blasting The Doors as I type this, and lovin' it. Playing the trippy version of The End that is featured on Apocolypse Now. From CD, if I play my MP3s you can really tell the difference between CD quality and crappy mp3s... huh never noticed that before.

Funny thing is I never bothered turning music up really loud before, because it always sounded like ****. Now I can. Definitely 100 bucks well spent.

The computer that's used to do the LP --> .WAV conversions uses a 100W Sony home theater receiver since the turntable is using the phono preamp. As a result, all the computer's audio is coming thru the bookshelf sized monitors. I probably should find an old audio card that provides a line out instead of using the headphone/speaker out.

I had the Klipsch Pro Audio 5.1's, and they kicked ass. Once in a while you can find a set on Ebay going for more than the original price. I may invest in some again sometime.

I have Logitech something or others. 5 speakers plus a sub, bought them on super sale. I'm happy with them, I need a better sound card on my computer before I can upgrade again.
On my next computer I'll get the best sound card I can and drop $200 on some nice speakers. This is the first time I have had anything close to surrond sound though, and its pretty fun.

I have an Audigy 2 card + a 5.1 high-output Logitech system, its as loud and crisp as I should safely go. I don't want to be deaf when I'm old....

well right now I only have a laptop with the built in speakers but by June I will have enough money to start my build on my Home Theater PC. I will then have the computer hooked up to my Audio Receiver(Onkyo tx-s606). The speakers are Cerwin Vega VE-12 for Front Main, VE-5C for Center, VE-5M for the back surrounds and a SVS sub. So its a 7.1 channel system and its going to just be awesome when I get it done.

I was considering buying the Bose CM3 speakers, but if I keep putting it off long enough, I'll just buy a surround sound system and play everything through that. I've always though Klipsch speakers were great. I remember when they were as big as backyard tool sheds.

If you want a true "near-field" monitor setup that sits on your desk, something like the M-Audio BX5a is where the good stuff starts. There is an optional sub that matches the monitors that gives you the great flexibility in matching to the monitors.

What does something like that cost?

I have a pair of custom built cabinets with Fostex full range drivers that were excellent. Should have kept those...

What sort of amp are you using, I ask because maggies are notoriously power hungry. And you can't possibly be driving them with a sound card.
