Volvo buying advice

I might go look at a 850 R wagon today with my brother. What are things to look for on one? It has around 150k miles on it, with a newer engine, and a bunch of perfomance upgrades. From the description, it sounds like it may have a few IPD parts on it as well.

Did you check out any of the Volvo forums? There are a bunch of them.

I just bought a 2002 Volvo XC70 AWD this week, and we are taking it to the snow this weekend.

Said car was very fast, but had used engine, and was burning some oil on start up. It looks like it was owned by college student, and was slightly abused...

Crazy, I was going to create another thread with the same title.

I test drove a 1975 Volvo 245 DL Wagon today for a friend of mine. It has a stick shift, and he didn't know how to drive it. Its been in the same family since new, and they claim the 75000 miles on the odmeter is accurate. Everything works, runs and drives fantastically. The only thing going against the car is some rust on the rear quarter panels around the wheel well.

Pictures here:

I know the old 240s are capable of starship like mileage of old diesels, but what about 245? What does 245DL mean anyway?

They are asking $800 for it, and have some service records, including a new starter and battery back last fall.

I would look at the transmission, after that the little stuff like MB's but in my own experience the V cars don't have many other issues other than putting gas in them and drive.

There were some V40's on the lot that caught my eye, but they were out of both mine and my brothers price range ( I could afford one, if I really wanted one bad enough). Maybe next time I am Seattle I will take one out for a test drive.

Back to said 850 R, my brother is talking about buying it, if he can come up with the funds for purchase.

2 = body series

5 = # of doors (4 doors + tailgate)

DL was least expensive trim.

I thought DL is intermediate. I think it means "Deluxe" or something. I have an '89 245 DL, power windows, bum warmers for both front seats, AC, and a super duper rare power sun roof.

This one has AC, manual windows, no heated seats.

How has your 245 DL treated you?

Well her we go again

Don't buy a 850/ s/v770/ s 80 ,60 or 90. They are all FWD junk. Volvo forgot how to build a luxury car and it shows. Do buy a 240, 740 or 940. The s/ v90 are very good cars as well as the 960 wich is essentially the same car.

I don't think I could drive one.....

I have a '93 940 Turbo Wagon that I've owned for 12 years. They're good cars if you can find a nice one, and compared to the 300TD, reasonably priced.

The FWD / AWD Volvos are great cars.

My Volvo mechanic says he sees 850 / S70 sedans with hundreds of thousands of miles on them come in for service.

The trick is to never buy the first or second year of a model run. The last year is generally always the best and trouble free.

It was fun to drive. The motor, tranny felt like it only had 75k on it. Its not pretty, but my friend of mine has a tendency to destroy everything he touches. I sold him a pretty nice 77 Firebird a few years ago. After wrecking it 3 times, he sold it and bought a 2003 Jetta. He hit a cow with that car within the first month, then got in a major accident totaling it out a few months later.

Here really should have kept the old bird. It had 80,000 original miles on it.

Here are my parent's matching Trans-Ams with my SL plopped in the middle
