Chavez, El Presidente por Vida!

Why wasn't this reported more? I had to go to the Guardian to find out that he won this...
Hugo Chávez wins referendum allowing indefinite re-election Electoral authorities say 54% of Venezuelan voters backed amendment abolishing term limits for elected officials

Chávez hails referendum victory in Caracas Link to this video Venezuelans yesterday voted to abolish term limits for elected officials, boosting Hugo Chávez's ambition to rule the country for decades.
Electoral authorities said 54% of voters in the referendum backed a constitutional amendment allowing indefinite re-election, with 46% rejecting it – a margin of almost 1 million voters.
An exultant Chávez appeared on the balcony of the presidential palace in Caracas to address cheering supporters after the result was announced. "It is a clear victory for the people," he said. "It is a clear victory for the revolution."
The result will boost his effort to transform the Opec country into a socialist state and burnish his leadership of Latin America's "pink tide" of leftwing governments.
The president's mentor and ally Fidel Castro sent congratulations from his sickbed in Cuba.
The US made no immediate comment, but the Obama administration will be dismayed at the prospect of an emboldened foe in Caracas.
Chávez, a 54-year-old former tank commander, has been in power for a decade and plans to run for election again when his term ends in 2013. He has spoken of ruling beyond 2030.
However, plunging oil revenues are expected to hit the Venezuelan economy and the petro-fuelled Chavez diplomacy soon.
Some analysts predict stagflation and devaluation of the bolivar currency – the kind of grim cycle that undid previous Venezuelan leaders – and there was speculation that Chávez had rushed through the referendum before the crisis hit.
The unexpectedly wide margin of victory prompted rapturous celebrations among "chavistas", who credit their charismatic leader for poverty-alleviating social programmes, notably free health care and discounted food.
"We did it, we won – this is a great night," Freddy Ramirez, a 48-year-old security guard, said.
Fireworks lit up the night sky and cars filled with flag-waving supporters drove around the capital.
However, not everybody celebrated. "Chavez has screwed this country enough already," Ricardo Torres, a 56-year-old courier, said.
He blamed the president for crumbling infrastructure and high crime and inflation.
Voters had narrowly rejected a referendum to abolish presidential term limits in December 2007.
Chávez learned lessons from that defeat, this time widening the terms of the referendum to allow mayors and governors to run indefinitely, giving them an incentive to mobilise support.
The government's "red machine" waged a formidable campaign. Posters urging a "yes" vote saturated the country, state TV networks cheered for the "si" and civil servants were sent out to canvass.
A flyer gave 10 reasons for voting yes. Number one said: "Chávez loves us and love is repaid with love", and the second stated: "Chávez is incapable of doing us harm".
The opposition, a fragmented coalition of small political parties and university students, accepted defeat but complained that the government had hijacked state resources and hobbled the "no" campaign.
"There was an abuse of power," David Smolanksy, a student leader, said.
Analysts said Venezuela's vote could embolden leaders in countries such as Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador to seek indefinite re-election, a return of the "big man" syndrome of charismatic autocrats that marked much of the region's 20th-century history.
"Many who are worried about unlimited executive power will be dispirited by the results. The record of such indefinite re-election in the region has been very unhappy," Michael Shifter, of the Inter-American Dialogue thinktank, said.
At a news conference on Saturday, Chávez sought to allay such concerns and said staying in office for more than a decade was not unusual. He cited examples including the US president Franklin Roosevelt.

Now Daniel Ortega is putting in an amendment in the Nicaraguan Constitution that will appoint him president for life!
Looks like Latin America is heading back to the future!

Time to get the CIA after those two and cancel their little show. We dont need any more tin pot communist dictators, espcially one with his hand on a giant oil tap and another whose country is closer to Houston than Washington DC is.

Sorry, Carter and Clinton destroyed the D.O. years ago. The CIA couldn't fight its way out of a wet, ripped paper bag, much less pull off a canceling operation...

What I love about Hugo's 'FREE ELECTION' was the use of tear gas to break up anti-referendum protests, and the government's banning of anti-referendum messages on TV and other media.
Shape of things to come, mark my words...

First you have to convince the masses that he is evil.
Then you go blow up his country and kill off anyone that will interfere with you taking all the oil.

And you dive the economy into the deep end paying for a holy war aginst terrorism.

You know, the old routine.

Economist in Chief:

Associated Press
CARACAS, Venezuela -- President Hugo Chavez on Saturday ordered troops to temporarily seize control of all Venezuelan rice processing plants to ensure they produce at full capacity amid soaring inflation and persisting reports of food shortages.

Mr. Chavez told the National Guard to "take control of and intervene in all of these businesses that process rice in Venezuela," including at least a half-dozen local and foreign private companies.

"This government is here to protect the people, not the bourgeoisie or the rich," Mr. Chavez said, accusing some companies of slowing production to evade price caps that have slashed their profit margins. He did not say what the takeover would involve or how long it would last.

Mr. Chavez imposed price caps on scores of basic foodstuffs including chicken, rice and sugar in 2003 to combat rising inflation, which at 31% is now Latin America's highest. He last raised rice prices a year ago to just over $1 per kilogram ($0.46 a pound).

Agriculture Minister Elias Jaua said troops would occupy company installations as "the first measure" in an unspecified takeover process, beginning with a rice plant owned by Empresas Polar, the country's largest food producer.

Polar's Primor-brand rice plant, located in the western state of Guarico, has been operating at less than 50% capacity in violation of federal regulations, according to Vice Minister of Agriculture Richard Canan. He said the government would guarantee maximum output at the plant.

Guillermo Bolinaga, Polar's legal director, could not be reached for comment on Saturday, but he strongly denied similar claims made by Venezuela's consumer protection agency on Friday. The agency suspended operations at the Guarico plant last week, accusing it of hoarding rice, Caracas' El Universal newspaper reported.

Other major rice producers operating in Venezuela include Minneapolis-based Cargill, which owns the Santa Ana Rice Plant in Portuguesa state. Jaua said Caracas-based Corporacion Mary, which produces four types of rice under the brand name "Arroz Mary," will be affected.

Mr. Chavez often threatens food suppliers he has accused of hoarding goods to sell on the black market for higher prices or waiting until price caps are raised. He first set his sights on Polar last year, calling it a "clear example" of the kind of business that is ripe for takeover.

On Saturday, Mr. Chavez warned that any rice processing company that threatened to halt output would be permanently seized by the government.

"I don't have any problem expropriating," he said. "And I'll pay them with paper, too. Don't think I'll pay them with hard cash."

In the past two years, Mr. Chavez has nationalized four major oil projects and some of the country's biggest electricity, telecommunications, steel and cement companies.

But remember, government regulation is bad !

And by having the BALLS to nationalize these industries, Chavez has created a 31% inflation rate...Way to go Hugo!
Can't wait for double digit inflation to come here and wipe out the rest of our savings!

Maybe you should go back and read this thread some more.

Chavez did something about the rampant inflation of food prices in his country.

That is what this thread is about.

Your logic is confused.

You are trying to say what hugo did caused the inflation.
When it was a response to inflation that was already happening.

Yea Hugo ! He wants people to be able to eat....

We had way more than double digit inflation of oil prices and good old President Bush did nothing.

Yea Bush, He helped big oil and not the people.
Because business profits are way more important thatn people being able to eat..

Think a little bit for yourself instead of blindly following.
