Home humidifier recommendations?

Hey Guys,

We recently discovered that the previous owners of our house removed the humidifier! Only the cover and on/off switch remains. Ugh. So the dry skin continues.....

We're looking at humidifiers and I thought I'd ask what others are using. A friend of ours recommended this unit which they're happy with:

I second the desert spring. I have had mine for 3 years now. I recommend a purge valve on the bottom to open every day so any minerals in your water are flushed out. I use a standard electronic garden hose timer that comes on at noon every day for 30 minutes. If you don't, you will get a buildup a scale on the bottom.

I installed one this year. I looked at the Desert Spring one, but decided to go with the Air King 6000 Flo-Through model.

I like that it doesn't have any standing water at all, uses a vertical water media box. It has been working perfectly thus far. Easy to install. You can buy replacement inline filters (for water supply line) and filter media. Also comes with a basic softener additive to keep any mineral particles in suspension, avoiding scaling.

Humidity in the winter is a significant issue here, with the long and cold winters and the furnace running frequently. Mine has kept my house in the 40-48% RH range all winter, has a digital thermostat built in. Very happy with it!

We have a Honeywell that uses a foam media drum, so it doesn't drain as it runs. It's a bypass design (hot air enters the side), but I'm not sure about that one.

Draining it every day may be sufficient, but I don't want to do that. We have a water softener, and even with that the scale on the drum is bad after 30 days. We also have a reverse-osmosis filter for drinking water, and I hooked it up to that instead. Now it doesn't get very dirty at all after 30 days, when it gets the vinegar treatment. If you use a filter for drinking water, this is an option.

I have a Honeywell, it works well.

Not matter what you get make sure the media is reasonably available.

Hate to buy a great unit that you can't get the media for when you need it.

I have an old fashoned water bath with evaporative elements standing in it. I also have a large kettle on my stove on low heat at all times steaming away. I keep the heat low enough that if it dries up and I don't realize it, it doesn't do anything drastic.

I had one of those Honeywell sponge humidifiers in one of my houses. When it went bad, I replaced it with a small box like gizmo that had a fuel injector like tip on it. It would spray a fine mist into the heated air. It worked very well. and was very low maintenance. I forget the name (this was over 10 years ago) but I remember I got it at Homer D. Po...
