My Long, Hard Quest for an Elusive Woody

My obsession with Woody Wagoneers was cultivated well before I even conceived of purchasing a Mercedes diesel. The impracticality coupled with higher prices for decent examples made the quest more difficult, and I gave up two summers ago.

The last one I drove the owner requested I not turn off the vehicle so the battery could charge. While we were negotiating, the car overheated and killed itself. My parents had one that caught fire before I was born.

Now its back with a vengeance, and much to my delight, prices seem half of what they used to be. The two I've pursued seriously in the past few weeks have fallen through, and I've communicated with many more sellers. The problem is my location, as no good examples are available locally, and the good ones sell before I can travel hours away to look at them.

Rather than continue to post in "The Positive Thread" I will put them here, but I hoping the right one will fall into my lap soon.

Yes, and even though I know the costs of parts, maintenance, and labor are stupidly ridiculous on Mercedes, I still like them.

Overhaul of a 617 diesel motor, $5000+++.... Overhaul of a AMC 360 V8, less than $2000.

But you have to factor in the cost of a new vehicle every now and then too....for when they catch fire. So that makes the Wagoner more expensive.

I only know of 1 catching fire...

When's the last time you cleaned out all that crap between your 2 firewalls? I've seen plenty of W126s destroyed that way. Dry leaves built up around hot electrical components.. poof.

I usually clean it a few times a year....

Not a huge issue around here since it seems to always be raining....so everything's nice and wet.

Tyler, you outta see the Wagoneer that H-Line Conversions built (for the Govonator)! I saw it the other day parked at a resturant, wow, looks sharp! Not stock though! Has a transplanted 6.5L GM turbodiesel IIRC. BUT, its bio-fueled and i briefly saw their custom badging that said
Bio-hybrid or somthing like that so more than meets the eye? You might know who H-Line is? They do diesel conversions, namly duramax's into H2's, and green technology. They did that Lincoln for Niel Young/TV deal. There over there just west of Hillside on Central. Seen it outside there shop too. I Drooled

Yup, I've been through their facility and ridden in one of their Diesel Escalades. Pretty cool stuff.

You might just pack some cash and head for Fort Worth one weekend. There are a lot of these there and they have never been on a salted road. Take I-35 to downtown Ft. Worth, take the Lancaster Road, turn to the east and drive towards Dallas. I think by the time you get to the Dallas city limits you will have passed, inclucing all the car lots in Arlington and Grand Prairie, about 100 lots. One of them is bound to have a good one.

Lancaster becomes Division in Arlington and Main in Grand Prairie, by the way. I think it is also called US 80 in some spots and US 180 in others.

There is also a wrecking yard in Ft. Worth, on Elliot-Reeder road, that sells nothing but Jeep parts. Be careful here; this is a rough part of town.

I had one for a short time years ago. It did ride very nice, but boy did it need a lot of repairs. The reason I was driving it was I was making a 'few' repairs on it for a friend. I finally had to give it back as it needed more time than I was willing to give it.

The leather seats also do not hold up well in the D/FW sun, but you can still find good ones that have been garaged. Most of these were bought by Doctors or whatnot before the Chevy Surbuban became the thing to have.

Good luck, Tyler! I'm with you on the irrational Grand Wagoneer desire as I have the itch myself.

The market has definitely adjusted itself. Things were a bit crazy as recently as a couple years ago when mint, low mileage examples were going for $25K+ and some were in the 30's!
