So you splice fiber....what about the lifespan rating on fiber cables? I dealt with fiber networking at my last project I was working on....and apparently the installers only warranty/rate the fiber to last like 7-10 years or something. Have you found this to be the case? I've worked with fiber much older that was still working fine.....but is there a real deterioration issue? I'd imagine it'd probably be worse with the plastic/polymer cables vs. the glass strand.....

If fiber only lasted 7-10 years, I will find myself busier than a one-armed paperhanger in about 3 years!
All of our fibers are glass - it has to be, plastics are too dirty...they would heat up and melt. As it is, a glass fiber can get pretty hot when there is video flowing through it....it'll sting ya.
I honestly don't know the lifespan of a fiber cable...I am sure it is more than 10 years. I am fairly sure that any cable failure will most likely be caused by a shovel/backhoe/disaster, than by it "wearing out" or breaking down somehow.

If I remember, I will ask around tomorrow, and find out how old the oldest section of fiber cable is in our area.

Interesting.....I mainly ask because where I was working, the fiber installers only warrantied the fiber for like 5-7 years against "degrading"....and they were having some signal clarity issues on fiber that was older (in the 15ish+ year range)....this was on long-range singlemode (and a little bit of multimode)....

Verizon FiOS is usually trouble free and they do deliver the promised bandwidth, however they seem to have DNS server issue from time to time. I suggest you use Open DNS servers for your DNS, you can find details at www.opendns.org

My God! The Verizon guy was here first thing this morning, measuring and checking everything out. They already have shown me they have service far superior to Cox! Even the lady who took my order was extremely helpful and very friendly. Of course, Cox was not a hard act to follow, but still, they are great so far.

For now, you need a box for every set. Remember when cable first came out? You had to have a box, because the VHF dial would only go to....what was it? 13?, and the UHF went from 20 to 70?? After a few years, TV's were being advertised as being "cable ready" - they received a coax input, and a tuner that could handle 131 channels (or at least more than what you could get before).
I imagine that down the road, you would be able to buy a TV that is "FiOS ready" - something that can handle not just HD, but several hundred channels...probably 2-3 thousand (my current program guide stops at channel 1951).

I don't know what they charge for each box....the price might vary from state to state as well. Installation charges have changed from the past as well. Right now, in my area, they are offering a $150 rebate, if you sign up for TV, Phone, and Internet - so that should more than off-set any install charges if they have the same deal in your state (one would hope!).
Verizon did not charge me for the install, but then again, we were beta-testing their system. The box charges are miniscule, perhaps $9 or $10 per box. The HD boxes are a bit more, so when I get all of the houshold sets replaced with HD units, I might start feeling the additional cost.

As far as box requirements, if you have an analog set, you will definitely need a box. Many HD sets did not have a built-in HD tuner because the standards weren't firmed up for awhile. So you may just have one or more HD "monitors", meaning you can not recieve signals without an external tuner...which is what the box provides.

And as Larry Delor stated, the 1000+ channels available are probably not in the range of most sets with internal tuners, but I'm not sure.

I am a VZ FIOS I&M(installation and maintenance) tech. You DO need a box for each TV. Our prices range from $3.99/mo (digital tuner) to $15.99/mo (HD box w/DVR). The prices can be less depending upon the what the business office decides. They periodically run specials such as 3 digital tuners for $12/mo. The currently promo is an HD box w/DVR free for 6 months plus $150 cash back after your service has been installed for 3 months.

The HD is awesome! I have had FIOS installed at my house for just over a year now. I rarely watch any of the channels that are NOT HD. I guess you get spoiled after you have seen the picture quality.

Installation charges are only $30 (activation fee) which can be split over your first 3 months. Of course if the tech has to run new coax cable thruout your house (some people have old RG59 cable which is deteriorating), or if we hafta install some new outlets, then we are getting into billable stuff. If you are a current DSL customer of ours then the $30 activation fee wil be waived.

As far as FIOS getting into the Grand Rapids area. We are concentrating on our own footprint right now. If VZ isnt the local telephone company, dont plan on having FIOS in your area for quite awhile.

My $0.02

When my wife and I bought our houe last summer I called our provider, Comcast, to move the account over. They told me that they didn't service that area (a regular suburban neighborhood!) and that they would have to have people inspect the area to see if we could even have service. If we could, it would be THREE months before they would install it!! My wife called the next day and was told not only would we be able to have service, the current owners already had Comcast!! What complete total idiots.

Long story short: we paid $150 to end our contract with Comcast and have Verizon FIOS. We couldn't be happier: the television looks as nice as a DVD all the time and the internet is fast. We also have a real land-line phone, not a computer based one so the line will be active even if the lights go out.

One of my good 'ol boy customers down here in FL kept referring to Comcast as "Communist-cast" the whole time during his install. He hated them.

The local cable company stopped advertising a few months ago...the FIOS option is far too superior for cable companies to win any customers.

Our cable provider...........Cablevision...........is the direct opposite to all the POS cable companies. Excellent service..........on site the very next day if a modem fails or the TV box fails...........provides a three hour window for the visit.........calls one half hour prior to arrival. Check up after the service to determine overall satisfaction. Superior customer service in an era of non-existent customer service.

My only issue with them is the price. The triple play (Family cable, internet, and phone) is up to $140.

Probably will keep them, however. The service by the telephone company (Verizon) is miserable.
