Got bees on the way!

Well, we worked out a deal with a local bee-keeper and he's basing about 14 hives at our place. In exchange, we get all the honey we can eat!

Sweeeet deal!

I'll put up a picture when they arrive.

14 hives? Thats alot by almost anyones standards...we have 4 right now and that still gives us more then enough honey every year.

That's awesome! Get a garden started immediately if you don't have one already. Do you have fruit trees?

We have a healthy, full grown cherry tree, a not so healthy cherry tree and 2 other babys that I'm trying to raise. We also have a bunch of dogwoods and some other flowering bushes.

No time for a garden now but we're putting in more perennials and bushes in the newly landscaped front flower beds.

so what does the bee keeper get out of it? Honey to sell and you get as much on the side or something?

With 14 good hives Kartek could put honey on something every meal for an entire family every day of the year and still have plenty left over by the end. Kartek gets a cut of the honey while the beekeeper takes his share. He also benifits from the increased pollination of any plants or trees in the area.

When we moved out to the country in the early 70's we had a huge hive in a hollow tree on the property line. Every year a 2nd queen with a cluster of workers(?)would come out and swarm on a near by tree. My father would call the local bee keeper and he would take them. They never bothered anyone. I believe the moron who moved next door went and killed them off fearing they would sting him. The pieces of honey comb left over were just dripping with honey. It had a very good flavor much different than store bought. The hive was close to a huge black berry patch where the bees would be all over the little white flowers. My father has a photo of our house around 1920 and in the side yard are half dozen bee boxes. I wonder if the hive in the tree were left over from that time or if the guy in 1920 started collect bees because of the hive.

If we had the property that would be nice, they sure would help the garden.

Nothing like good ol bee puke on your morning toast!

I could never understand why people kill bees.
