David, I don't like to compare my home stereo with that of any car's. As far as I'm concerned no car stereo comes to even 1% of my home system. If you're curious why I say that, (I'm always trying to convert people to Magnepans) go check out a pair of Magnepans at your local stereo store Better yet, check out their website at www.magnepan.com and look for the special offer where you can purchase a small pair and turn them in at full retail value if you upgrade!

Here's a bad pic (real bad, no vtl's there)

Since my car had no radio when I bought it i've put in a Pioneer tuner/cd player.
And the only space for speakers is central in the dash.
I've put in 2 small highperformance speakers there.
Isn't great for the stereo effect but it sounds good enough for me

Another thing,20-25 yrs ago,I saw and heard
a pair of thin speakers called Quad Electrostatic.
Are this the same technology like the Magnepans?

Yes, I think if you saw them 20 years ago that was the them the first generation came out. Personally and I say again PERSONALLY I have played with Magnepan and many of it's like and I PERSONALLY think that upper end Polk Audio of Infinity blow them away in every respect. HOWEVER with a good Sub and a Excellent sound processer I am sure you can get the electrostatic speakers to match almost anything.

The Quads are electrostatic, the Magnepans are Ribbon speakers. Check out Audio Consultants in Chicago (4 locations) if you want to give them a listen. Speakers, stereos, cars, oh whatever. It's all a matter of personal preference. There are tons of speakers out there which blow away Magnepans in one respect or another. But Maggies are just about the best in presenting a holographic soundstage. Coherence seems to be only achievable with this kind of planar-magnetic dipole design. The larger Magnepans go down to 34 Hertz, way lower than the lowest bass string on a bass and definitely low enough for the longest pipe organ stops. My Magnepans run flat to around 40 Hz in my room, with a slight peak in the upper midrange. This is low enough to induce a small tremor at low pipe organ frequencies. If you're looking for slammin' effects and explosives, then Magnepans aren't the right speaker for you. You're better off with a sub and a pair of good quality infinity or B&W's. But if you're looking for that
sense of "thereness" then Maggies are the way to go.

Manny, your Parasound equipment will work perfectly well with Magnepans. In fact, I wouldn't consider it an "upgrade" but rather a simple change. Maggies aren't really that difficult to drive because the impedance doesn't really go down that low unlike some other speakers. I've always considered Parasound equipment to be slightly on the "brutish" side

Blues Brothers , good one Sven. The writers stole that line from me :p

And why throw out the radio just because it plays music that has words I can understand Dale?? Shoot, that's what the CD is for...playing all my Parrothead tunes . Must have something to do with growin' up on the good coast - the Gulf Coast.

Wow, cool thread. My system includes Duntech Sovereign PCL2001's in Brazilian Rosewood, Classe 700 monoblocks, Audio Research CL150's with KT91's, Audio Research LS2B, Theta ProGen III, Esoteric CD transport, Macintosh MR78 tuner, Sony PCM-F1 and 601 PCM processors, and a Sony SL2700 betamax, the latter three for PCM tape playback. Cables are Cardas Hex 5 speaker, Audioquest balanced interconnects, Goldmund digital coaxial cables. Too bad my wife wanted her bedroom back; I seldom get to turn it on anymore. I might sell off some of this stuff, or move to a bigger house with a dedicated listening room.

My home theater: Sony PVM-3230 monitor, B&W Matrix 801 Series 2's, numerous Beta and VHS decks, a cheap Toshiba DVD, etc.

OMG Robert Roe your system costs more than a new E-Class! I'd love to give it a listen one of these days.

How do you guys collect all of this stuff AND still have room left in your wallet for MBs?

My home system is an accumulation of 20 years of scrimping for a single piece of a desired component each year since college. I usually would make the purchase on my birthday. I can't even remember the manufacturer's names! Some are very nice pieces bought used (rich guy's junk CAN be another man's gold)...

After I was done with that (although a true audiophile NEVER is), I started collecting equipment for my budding music career...that ended in a few short years, but I have a nice rack of gear and some keyboards that look great in my study.

Right now with the ecomony, I have put my home theater plans on hold...but I expect prices will fall in the years to come, and I will be able to buy good-quality projectors, players speakers, etc. at mainstream prices.

Kuan, I PAID more for my stuff than a new E-class. Whether it's worth much in today's market is another question. I'd gladly trade most of it for a new E-class, or even a good 1992 500E
