National Medal of Honor Day today...
I know there are several of us on the forum who appreciate reading about men and women of military accomplishment. This is interesting!

I've had the honor of meeting not one but two MoH recipients. I do not remember their names but one served in Vietnam and the other served in WWII. I do think it was 'nam... But I remember the medals. Everytime I get a chance to talk to a WWII vet or any other veteran I tell them thanks for what they have done

I remember a fellow receiving the MoH during the 1980's for service he had given in Veit-Nam. The Pentagon had trouble finding the required number of witnesses to his bravery, but they never gave up and eventually found enough of them still alive to provide the needed testimony.
I don't remember who was President then, but part of the cerimony involved comments about how this would likely be the last MoH ever given out since the world was now at peace. At the time that sounded like a reasonable statement. But all I could think of was the saying, "Only the dead have seen the end of war." |

I used to be a member of the local American Legion, mainly so I could sit and hear the stories of all the old timers. Highly recommended activity for anyone who doesn't understand the sacrifices made by these people.

The only MoH winner's I've ever visited were dead. Most of them are before they receive it.

I would have bet money that the majority were posthumous.

My uncle, and my best friend's dad were both awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
Great men do great things in the momennts of their life when under fire.

I'm very well aware of that but there are more than two citations so posting the specific citations would be helpful. |
