Sara-Jane O., We Missed You So.

Former 1970s Radical Olson Back In Minn. SACRAMENTO (AP) ― Former 1970s radical Sara Jane Olson is back in Minnesota Wednesday night, a day after she was paroled from state prison. Olson arrived at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport early Wednesday evening, a day after she was released from a California prison. Olson didn't talk to reporters. The 62-year-old Olson was paroled early Tuesday from the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, in California's Central Valley. She served half of a 14-year sentence after pleading guilty to participating in the deadly 1975 robbery of a Sacramento-area bank and helping place pipe bombs under Los Angeles Police Department patrol cars. At the time, she was a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army, a violent group that sought to overthrow the government and was best known for kidnapping newspaper heiress Patty Hearst. Olson left California the same day a Los Angeles police union asked Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to review whether it is legal for California to let Olson serve her parole in Minnesota. The Los Angeles Police Protective League said in a statement Wednesday that she should not be allowed to go home given that she was a fugitive and not a legal resident at the time of her 1999 arrest. The California penal code states parolees can be transferred to another state only if the offender was a legal resident of the other state prior to incarceration, the league said. The organization also questioned whether Olson's release to Minnesota was in the public's interest because her family there could be motivated to cover for her if she violates the terms of her parole. The league wrote Schwarzenegger late Tuesday asking him to review the legality of the parole. Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Lisa Page said the letter had not yet been received. California has more than 1,000 parolees living out of state. Olson was named Kathleen Soliah in the 1970s when she was a member of the SLA. During her 24 years as a fugitive, she adopted the name Sara Jane Olson and became a Minnesota housewife, married a physician and raised three daughters. The police union and others still refer to her as Soliah. Lynn Musgrave, a Twin Cities theater director and sound designer who directed Olson in several productions, said she understood why police and some others opposed her return to Minnesota. But Musgrave said Olson has paid her debt to society. "She is a different person now than she was," Musgrave said. "We all are. We were all activists in the '70s and expressed ourselves in different ways. Her choices were regrettable, but that's behind her." She expects Olson to return to doing some sort of community work after getting resettled. "I expect she's going to want to live a very private life for a long time," Musgrave said. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty also had asked Schwarzenegger to ensure Olson stays in California. In a response to Pawlenty that was released publicly Wednesday, Schwarzenegger said he decided not to override the decision by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Department officials found "it is in the best interest of the public that Ms. Soliah serve her parole in Minnesota," Schwarzenegger said in a letter. He said studies have shown that reuniting families protects the public by reducing the chances ex-convicts will commit new crimes. Schwarzenegger said Olson meets the requirements of an interstate compact "for mandatory acceptance by the receiving state." "Ms. Soliah's case received no special courtesy" from the Corrections Department, Schwarzenegger wrote to Pawlenty. He noted that the Minnesota Department of Corrections formally accepted her parole supervision on March 9.

She didn't mean to hurt anybody and she's a community activist, so all is well. Maybe one of her friends will run for high office someday.

Quote:
The SLA was even more violent than the Weather Underground. Starting with the killings of the Oakland, Ca school Superintendent Marcus Foster and his aide, then the Hibernia Bank robbery where they shot and wounded two people, The gun fight at their 'safe house' in LA with the LAPD, the Crocker Bank robbery and finally the pipe bombs under the police cars. Oh yeah, then there was the whole Patty Hearst thing... SJO is a hardened killer and bank robber, not a freedom fighter or terrorist... So what if she hid among the "Fascist Insects who suck the life blood of the people" for 20 years acting in community theater and raising kids -- that was an act.

I can't believe it's already been seven years. My God, it seems like it was only a year or two that they were sending her away. Wasn't she the one that kept vassilating about her plea?
Have those people she killed been released from the grave yet? . . . .

Like I said. We should only be upset at bombers if they kill somebody. The rest of the time it's just another venue of political expression. Besides, people shouldn't be hanging out where people put bombs.

She hid for 20 years, coward. If she'd have turned herself in, I might have some sympathy.
