Having recently bought a home I can say that both the bank and realtors try to talk you into homes you can't afford me and my wife went in with a set price point 55,000 was the MAX. Well after we talked to the bank they tried to tell me that I could "easily" afford a 120,000 dollar home, the realtor tried to tell me to look in the 90-105,000 range. If the person isn't that street smart and easily duped this could=very bad things.

Good on you for sticking to your guns. How many times did they try to get you into an adjustable rate?

Wish I could by a house for 55k. Around here that doesn't get you a postage stamp with a shotgun shack

I guess that is why the economy is in such trouble.

We did not have sound minds like yours leading the way.

Yeah, it's all a joke.

Back in '97, some con artist talked a 78 year old widow into a refi that would provide money for some roof repairs. The home was in one of the parts of Oakland that are becoming more upscale.

Turns out the contractor -- allied with the lender -- screwed the job up, then a balloon payment of $162K was due after a year into the loan. At one point in the reporting, the guy running the scam even admitted that it was unlikely the lady was going to be able to handle the loan and its conditions from the beginning.

The woman, a black lady whose husband had bought the place about 30 or 40 years previous, was slated to be evicted, but a judge stopped it. I think she eventually lost the case and died of a heart attack a couple years later.

People who disagree with you are of unsound mind.
