Civil war. The milita were not intended for action against a foreign aggressor but as a standing force of action against the nations own government. The freedom of which the 2nd speaks is not from foreign invasion from from domestic oppression.

I vote for enforcing the laws we already have. Eliminating the sale of assault weapons. (If you want one, you should be licensed) Severe penalties for illegal sales or importing of firearms. Get rid of the large magazines, there is no earthly reason for magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. If your record has ANY violent crimes, crimes against children, gang related crime, drug related crime, gun related crime, sex related crime, YOU don't get to have a gun.

My favorite - Russian SKS circa 1950 (I have only 10 round clips, destroyed the 30 round bananas)
Favorite handgun - Stainless 357 mag with 8" barrel
Shotgun - really depends on the application, but for home defense the mossburg 500 with riot barrel

I see no reason a militia could not do both, but I must say, you are very wrong, the primary purpose of the militia in the 18th Century was to repel invaders.

Criteria for owning any fire arm:

1. Must have a DL.
2. Must have a job.
3. Must never have been convicted.
4. One or all of the above
5. If you served in the arm forces non of the above apply.

No. The 1'st civil war was against the government of King George which was the government of the 13 colonies. The 2'nd was enshrined in order to ensure no future government would ever be able to oppress the citizenry in the way KG's did.

Have you ever tried to purchase a military grade Kalashnikov or M-16? Those are assault rifles, and they are already illegal for anybody but the military and law enforcement to have. The rest of us have to be satisfied with semi automatic rifles that are not assault weapons at all - even if they look like them. Give me a bolt action Winchester Model 70 any day - or should that be regulated too (because it's really just a nicely decked out sniper rifle)?

Buy a file, it doesn't take a lot of effort to convert them. That's why they should be more tightly controlled.

Maybe your an indigenous person in Alaska, with no possible use for a car, but could use a gun for hunting?

You're a fifth generation farmer in Iowa with no 'job'?

You are a reformed college student who got arrested for underage possession of alcohol?

You were in the armed forces and you just happen to be a violent a55hole?

It's tough to come up with ANY iron clad method of who gets them. Our background check system now works fairly well, but the loopholes need closing.

It just so happens that I have not one, but TWO leg lamps. Alas, no Red Ryder BB gun, though.

I have a Leg Lamp as well, and I also have no Red Ryder BB gun. based on the replies in this thread, I will not talk about what guns I do have

No restrictions on law abiding citizens.

I want a G36 and P90, but because those rifles scare panty wearing, limp wristed, sissy liberals we can't own the good versions.

I also want the hot five seven rounds for that P90 that are designed to cut through police body armour.

I was really into guns until my mid-20's. Went to an indoor range with my S&W 586, hacked around with an UZI 9MM (Model B), shot trap, but didn't hunt much. For some reason they don't interest me at all anymore, but I wouldn't mind doing some pheasant hunting again.
