Need some feedback about shipping a toolbox
 

I am relocating from Miami to NY for a year or so and I have a Snap-On Classic 78 Tool box that I need to take with me. I am contemplating on renting a U-Haul and driving up or finding a shipper for my tool box. I have found it quite difficult to find a shipper for my tool box. Any forum members with any feedback on my situation will be greatly appreciated.

How do you plan on moving the vehicles and your other items? A Uhaul sounds like a good idea.

get it up off the wheels transporting them like that is hell on the box. I would go the uhaul route. build a frame to set in on.

I've never taken the box up off the wheels, but I've never taken one quite that far.

for short distances it would be ok. i used to work in the field on the side. when i had my brand new husky tool box i noticed after about a month that it was showing wear. (around 200 miles) now that i have the big matco box i wont even think about transporting it unless i have to.

think about the forces put on four little areas measuring 4x2 or somthing close to that size.

Never bothered a Snap-On:D

it would probably not be a problem, but i wouldnt wanna risk it.

why risk it when it will cost all of 10 bucks to make a frame to set it on.

I can deal with my clothes later on. I was thinking of renting a pickup truck and putting my motorcycle on the bed and renting a small U-haul enclosed trailer to put my tool box in...

Probably be best to rent an enclosed uhaul truck, although my last move (CO to CT) I found Penske to be by far the best. Trucks were much newer, diesel, and cheaper. Also, I joined AAA and saved 10% immediately on the truck, which more than paid for the membership. As for renting a pick up, most rental companies do not allow towing with their rentals (Enterprise, Avis, Alamo, etc), and have no hitches. For the box, I would get a couple 6X6's and let it ride on them.

I have narrowed the shipping comapnies to U-Haul, Budget & Penske. The only reason that I do not want to use these companies is becuase their trucks are too big hence I will be wasting all of that empty space. Also I can only fit 2 people in those big box trucks.

Any one out there that knows of a legit shipping carrier for my tool box?

Never shipped anything that big.
For truck rental, you could look for the truck with the door from cab to box. My friend moved with 4 other people in one of those. Left the door open, and put a couch in the front of the box.

Check with a commercial line such as Yellow. Also, check what the USPS will charge...

I think jplinville has the answer. If it was boxed with wooden framing and sent on a better quality Common Carrier with insurance for the box and contents, it would arrive at the terminal with less expense then renting vehicles. You would not have to worry about theft and trouble on the trip. Good luck
