they have been offered fuel and technology to build reactors under the condition they give back spent fuel for more fuel. if all they wanted was energy, this would save them billions of dollars. I guess it does force a little dependance on the new fuel, but our motivation would be to get back the spent fuel which is the first step to plutonium.

There are a LOT of people in Iran that do not like him, and he is up for re-election in June this year.

I just think it is silly to base our views, foreign policy (at least as expressed to us in the media) and ways of solving problems on ONE MAN.

This is the real power in Iran and a more fanatical bunch you could never meet. I think that they would gladly trade Tehran for TelAviv in a nuclear exchange -- after all they would go to heaven and get their virgins, wouldn't they?

It's a small, quickly closing window of opportunity for Obama with all of these wacky nations. I'm pleased that he's reaching out early and often. After a year or so Obama's "new" will be worn off, everybody will have him carefully pegged and bracketed and will anticipate his reactions fairly well. People wil begin cashing-in chips at the big table and he will have to pay-off his debts. He may still come out ahead but it will wound him. When that happens his options become extremely limited and he becomes a caretaker for his own newly-entrenched people and programs. It always has followed this trajectory with a "reform" politician.

If he doesn't push early and often he has no chance of any significant accomplishments. But if he pushes too hard he will lose all support for other initiatives that he may wish to advance later.

In the long run he will fall to what all of his precessors have fallen to: Hubris and exsanguination from multiple tiny wounds that never heal and weep constantly.

I think it's a lot easier to get uneducated street kids to blow themselves up for the promise of virgins than it is for fundamentalist leaders ensconced in power. You don't see OBL blowing himself up for virgins.

I think it depends on on how crazy the leaders are and how fanatically right they believe themselves to be.
OBL may not blow himself up because he still thinks he will be the Calif of Baghdad. I think (and I repeat THINK) that the Supreme Leader and his cronies might see trading Tehran for TelAviv as a good thing, especially if they relocate to Qom first...
I also think that if we give some recognition to the reformers we could have a positive impact in Iran. We missed the boat when Mohammad Kahtami was President. If we had opened relations with him, he might have had enough political power to stand up to Khamenei...
