Well the French lost a hostage. Would you volunteer to be that soul so your mates would be liberated?
We have but one hostage to save, if he is lost the mission is a failure.

I know you know it but I've said many times on this forum that the French special forces does not f--- around and the French may be pussies in every other regard but they don't like anything that interferes with business. I put them on par with our own SF, the South African Special Police and Israelis.

although my personal favorite is the now gone PATU, I have an authentic PATU tshirt somewhere that thing commands some respect if your in the right crowd.

Capt. Phillips, I believe, would disagree. He accepted, no he volunteered for, his fate a couple of days ago. Whatever it is.

Issue one of these units to everyone on board any vessel transiting the Gulf of Aden and Bab el Mandeb.

there is no hurry, those guys are going to get tired of bobbing after a while. the US navy sent them some food and batteries but ignored requests for fuel. as long as they are just floating, they are no danger, just comes down to how long you want to tie up all those ships. Maybe the justification will be to finally catch them and get data on the pirate infrastructure if there is any.

the french were out of choices, my guess is if it wasnt a sailboat and was adrift, they would be camping next to it also.

Yeah. They shot because they had to. As long as the pirates can't run, you can shoot them whenever you want, you don't have to do it while they have the hostage.

I KNEW it! Karl Rove is behind it:

"Officials in Washington confirmed reinforcements were nearby, listing the frigate USS Halyburton, equipped with guided missiles and helicopters, and a German frigate.

The USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship, was also on its way, mainly in case its medical facilities were required."

Obama is going to make an outreach video addressed to the pirates, offering them green cards and flights to Minneapolis if they'll let our hostage go free.

We have time on our side. The pirates don't.

If they do bring more ships to the area, they are just making it worse for themselves.

Here's an interesting question: What if they bring more hostages, from other countries, on those ships? They aren't our citizens, but is that an excuse to fire away?

Unless these pirates are stopped they will keep doing this. Every time they get paid for taking ships and people they get bolder. Every day that they keep the USN at bay, they get stronger.
As I have said before the Navy should tell them to prepare to be boarded and that if any harm comes to their hostages things will go from bad to worse for them. The difference between simple piracy and murder is being hung.

We took care of this very thing back in 1804 The same rules apply today.

If we negotiate with these pirates now and pay them or even let them go with safe passage it will be a black mark against the USN and the United States to the point where we should change the red stripes on our flag to yellow and sell our ships to France and India. At least THEY have the guts to fight these guys...

I think our negotiation should go something like this:

1. They give up the hostage unharmed, they get safe passage-directly to a trial where they will invariably be convicted and given lengthy sentences.

OR

2. Don't give up the hostage and get turned into hamburger meat courtesy of a 5 in gun.

Let them sit a few more days without food or water and I'm pretty sure they'll take option 1.
