JETTA 2001 140 K MILES
 

Hello Guys:
I am going to buy a car to my daughter and among those many that I can afford to pay, I found a Jetta 2001 - 4 cylinders - Sedan - 2.0 engine -- auto -- with 141 K miles with an extremely good condition internally, externally and a very clean engine. I start this car and the engine sounds and run very smooth. I can hear no abnormal noises, valve knocks or any noises.
The car is for sale by a dealer in Garland - TX for $4300.00 with all paperwork and tax included. What you guys think about the engine mileage for this WV car made in Mexico? Buying this car I will be the 3rd owner.

I used the used car appraisal feature at edmunds.com, making a few assumptions about the car and using my zip code, and it came up with a dealer retain quite close to what your dealer is asking. The only specific complaint I've heard of on these cars is that the window regulators tend to fail early and often. I don't know if that has been addressed by VW. While I personally would prefer a TDI/manual, that's up to you and your daughter. I say go for it.

I would avoid any VW with an automatic transmission, but you might get lucky with this one. You might check out some VW-specific forums (VWVortex.com, etc...). If your daughter can drive stick, I'd definitely avoid the automatic.

Hmm. The answer, as an owner of two VW's, is HELL NO!

I don't have any firsthand knowledge, but I've heard from more than one reliable source that high mileage VWs tend to be money pits. Nice cars, though.

While lucky enough not to have owned one, I've known enough people who have, and a friend of mine is a service manager for a VW dealer. I still have not met anyone with something nice to say about these cars.

+2 Had to give away my wife's Cabriolet, got sick of fixing it, and would have felt guilty about taking money for that POS. The dad of the girl we gave it to (our babysitter, she just HAD to have it) gave me a ration one night at a party when he found out I was the one who had caused him so much grief;)

I think she'd like a 560Sl roadster much better than the VW.

As a dad, I would be a little concerned about how good she would look in a car like that.:D

VS'w in general, I have found, can be excellent cars. I just wouldn't buy an automatic. My TDI is at 170K and has yet to need any major repairs (knock on wood). I have owned Rabbits, Caddy diesels, a Scirocco, a camper bus, a Dasher wagon, and a few others I am sure I have forgotten, and every last one of them has been a great car. I think a lot of it has to due with the previous owners' maintenance sense.

That said, I have indeed heard many complaints about the newer VW's. The newest one I have ever owned is a 98 (the TDI). I have heard good things about the TDI wagons -- I believe they were still made in Germany until recently. They command quite a premium, though.

I had read all posts today, 04/14/09 and I want to say thanks for every one for their thoughts. I found it very helpful.
I drove this car yesterday and I found the following: Transmission makes smooth changes, engine has no knocks when running or in idle, brakes are good, body are in good condition, interior are nice, color is blue, and everything works.
One thing that brought my attention: Dash board has two alarms that don't go away.
One is Check Engine and the other is for the Airbag. Dealer said that Air Bag alarm can be reset by a VW dealer and the Check Engine is code:P0343 that means bad oxygen sensor. I don't know yet if is true.
If anyone has something more to tell me I will appreciated.
