Is this a scam or for real?

A friend called me up all panicked because his computer had gotten locked up.
The computer does its POST and goes immediately to a website page called the Privacy Center.
It scans and says there's all kinds of things wrong with his computer such as spyware, license fees, registry errors etc., and they want a clean 100 bucks to fix it all.

I told him to diconnect his Internet and wait.

It smells like a scam to get credit card numbers and info.

The page uses the URL http://dl765.privacy-update.com/licenses .

I looked this up on WHOIS.net and got nowhere, ditto Google

I went to this site and it looks like it's a parking spot for other links.

Anybody ever see this?

Sounds like bad juju to me. Run a good anti-virus and anti-spyware. I like AVG, it's free and it is consistently voted in the top of it's class.

Yes a scam, could even be the latest conficker variant.
Read something that a subset of the infected computers were getting an update that was showing it's "business Model".

One last ditch repair trick can be to do a remote registry on the RUN entry.

Careful though, editing the registry is dangerous ....

Whoa, AVG (what's that) is free and rated very good? I pay $30 a year for Spysweeper owing to some similar computer hijacking trouble several years ago. It's done me well, perhaps I shouldn't be so disloyal so quickly but free is free.

AVG is free and very good. When you open the control for the free version, it will always have an ad to buy the paid product, but you can click on the X to remove the ad each time. But really it is not a problem, and is the only price that you pay.

Dude, AVG rocks. I've been using it for years. Recently decided to let it handle my spyware needs as well (used to use Lavasoft adaware, also free and also very good) as it has convenient ability to run automatically. I can only hope you use Firefox too.

I dumped "McAfor a Fee" for AVG about a year ago. It is a great suite of tools. I did pay for it, but I wanted all the updates...

What your friend has ia a scam. Have him boot from a clean floppy and run a virus scaner/spyware scanner

Not just an invitation. It's already there. The hundred bucks is it trying to make money; that's one of the ways.

The other is spam. Any bets on whether the machine in question is currently sending spam?
