People are moving on to bigger and better things, which is why GM is dying. You cannot have staff to support a 50% market share if you only have 20%. Yes, you are right, there is more slack than there should be. OTOH, we have our friend Darwin to tell us that if we cannot evolve, we die. These affected people need to be on top of their game and move on to the next employer that is going to pick up some of the slack left by GM or move to another industry. When my company was having issues, I saw the writing on the wall. Within 2 weeks of them firing me, I was already settling down to run my own business.

1. Too stupid to know any better
2. Too lazy to put in the sweat and tears to do it
3. Too scared to take any risks and prefer a steady paycheck
4. A combination of the above

The OP never mentioned being happy about this either.

You both missed my point entirely. It was the JOY in of failure of the original poster that I found in bad taste. I'm okay with GM filing for bankruptcy, and I hope they can fix their problems (unions) and become stronger, but to stand there and smile at the failure of it all is sinister.

That was my point exactly. It's as if because they are a (gasp!) domestic producer they are the enemy.

I am a GM man myself but I find it hard to root for them seeing as how badly they suck. I don't consider them the enemy because they are domestic. Quite the contrary. I consider them a bloated dinosaur that should have gone out of business instead of being bailed out by the taxpayers. If they are going to go out of business, maybe it is best that they go out of business sooner than later after sucking billions of dollars.

That said, haven't we always made fun of inapt people who get into trouble? We laugh at them, make fun of them and are happy when they are down. I would say it is "par for the course" when talking about people.

You do realize a fantastic plumber is probably a terrible landscape architect?

i've had gm stuff for over 30 years.but the new stuff is just junk.i have not seen one GM vehicle in the last 10-15 years i would buy.i would have bought a dura-max suburban, but noooo they won't build one.i'd also buy a small 4 or 6 cyl diesel pickup, but again nooo they cancel the v-6 dura-max project.what gets me about the pensions is hey i work for a small company and i don't have one and i guess i'll survive alright when i retire.why can't they.will it lower their standard of living??$54000 a year plus SS.man i wish i made that much a year. i'd retire in 10 yrs.i guess if i was entitled to that much per year i'd fight like hell to keep it coming too.

exactly the same way I feel. making fun of inept people/companies often will force them to get better or leave. ive been laughed at many times and Ive welcomed it since it motivates me to be the best at what I do.

Now that I drive a Chevy I hope they don't file!

Seriously, I just got back from the car show and while their cars were just ok they had some fantastic trucks. GM really does make the best truck on the market, although I do like Ford. Caddy has come a long way and is probably on par with anything else.

GM has come a long way though, the new G8 is a nice car...I'd be very interested in a used one at the right price with the stick...its seriously fast.

What's your point? You said I think the lesson is get rid of ufking management. IF management were that useless and sucking up money for nothing, go without it and do it on your own. After all, they do nothing so why keep them along? To use your example, you might be right that a good plumber is not a landscape architect. In that case, if the job calls for a landscape architect and you are not it, STFU and pay the man.

Who's "we"? You mean "you". Just because you act that way doesn't mean we all do that. Dishonest people think everyone else is dishonest because it makes them feel better about being dishonest; the justification still doesn't make it right.

I don't laugh and make fun of people who are on their way down; someday, that might be me going down and I wouldn't want to be treated that way.

Yeah, right. Nobody takes delight at say Palin, Hilton, Michael Jackson, etc, etc when they get into trouble. Sure.

Dishonest people do what? They are dishonest because they are dishonest. They don't need to feel better about what they do because if they really wanted to feel better, they would have given up their ways a long time ago.

Oh yes. And because you don't laugh at people going down you too will not get laughed at when you are in that position. Sorry, if the "Golden Rule" had worked, few people would do naughty things.

Its true , its not polite to laugh although GM has been laughing at YOU for the last 30 years. They tested the tolerance of US consumers by systemically stripping value out of all their cars, and they ultimately lost.

Now GM needs to either change or become obsolete. It would be great if everyone in America started supporting their home industries, but its really American-style business practices that need to be updated for the 21st century before that can happen.
