Wireless network randomly died(almost urgent)

I'm running XP on the home computer, which is the acess point for the net and VISTA on my laptop that I use for school. It's got all my school software/files on it, and I need to send a paper in by midnight. It's all typed up on word 2007, the home PC doesnt support it, so even if I put it on a jump drive, i cant send it.

I was working on the laptop, and the internet ramdomly stopped working (I'm using firefox's latest version). I also was informed that the home computer's internet died at the same time.

I removed the router (linksys 54G) from the system (wireless laptop, eathernet cable? from router to PC), and connected the PC directly to the cable. Internet's now working

I tried to reset the router, and it did not help. I tried resetting the modem, and the router, and it did not help. I setup a new network with a different name, and my laptop cannot connect to that network.
Is there another free tool besides what windows provides to manage a wireless network? I just gotta get this paper sent in, if it gets near eleven I can retype it and submitt it in word 03, but the school computers all run word 07 so that might not work either.

Help?
~Nate

Word 03 documents will open up in Word 07. However Word 07 documents won't open in Word 03. Documents created in Word 97-03 are in saved the .doc format. Documents created in Word 07 are saved in the .docx format by default. Despite that, documents created in Word 07 can be saved in the older .doc format, or in Compatibility Mode so that they can be opened in the 97-03 versions.

Go to the laptop, open the doc, and do a "office button>save as"

Click word 97-2003 and save it on the flash drive.

Stick it in the home box, and try it out.

Out of curiosity, through what sort of procedure do you actually submit your paper to them?

It's a school controlled email type submission system.
I get word 07 on my laptop VIA a program called citrix. The school has a commercial account with microsoft, which allows them to allow students to access the schools copy of all the most current software. Trick is, one must connect to the school servers in order to use said software. It's a slow painfull process... And non-transferrable to another computer.

Getting my network back up would rock though...

Word 2007 files SHOULD open in 2003, it will/may ask to DL a converter (Maybe a Down verter ??) which will allow it to open. SOME features may get lost, but they are more advanced, though the uploaded file will be Word 2003 format.

I went into the router setup (http://192.168.1.1) and renamed the network, and gave it a new password. I refreshed all the settings to my preference, and now my laptop can see the new network. Now I try to connect, and it says that I am connected to the network, but do not have acess to the internet. When I try opening firefox, a "connect broadband connection" diolog box pops up prompting me for a username and password. I enter in my router username and password, and it says "connecting through WAN Miniport (pppoe)
About a min later, it says there's an error connecting to broadband connection...

WTF???

Currently I have the home PC connected to the router, and the router is broadcasting a signal... grr

Sounds like your not getting to the internet.

It's not asking for the router userid/password, it's the ISP password ie comCr*p, Verizon or ???

bill gates doesn't want you using Firefox.

disable the windows firewall.

if that works, and you can log on successfully, make an exception in the firewall settings for Firefox.

also, make sure the card in your laptop is using its own software, not windows networking software (or both) - it may be confused and conflicted

How do I do that?

Your school uses Citrix to allow students onto Office 2007? Wow. That IT dept must be insane.

Either way, sounds like your router is not set up properly. Usually cable internet services do not use usernames and passwords, they do it by modem MAC address. You could do a "full reboot" of the router. (Hold the rest button for several seconds while plugging in the power cord)....this will restore ALL settings to default. Then go through it and set the config again.

It doesn't address your wireless issue, but there is an add-on from Microsoft that allows earlier versions of Word/Excel/PowerPoint to open the new 2007-formats. You can find it here,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en

Install it on your home PC and it will handle the new documents without any problems! I've installed it on 1200 PC's with Office 2003 and it works like a charm.

Office 03 will not rea 07 doc's. 07 will read 03 doc's however you can save 07 doc's in an earlier format for backwards compatibility. You don't need to have 07 on computer that currently has internet access merely to transfer the file. However if you only have citrix on your laptop why not just plug a network cable into your laptop from your router instead of mucking about with wireless settings?

Mute point, but it's because my mom uses this one for her business, and I use my laptop for everything. I'm on the 2nd floor, the router is on the 1st floor.

Our IT department is crazy. It's the part time job that ALL networking students get... Slow as balls, seriously, citrix sux majorly...
Got an 89 % on that paper, out of 75 pts... Not too bad at all.
Still no time to fix it yet, damn schooling
