"No deaths or serious injuries have resulted, but some fire officials say it is only a matter of time."

That's ABC news for you. What a bunch of fear mongers.

count me in as someone who would want to know if my neighbor was storing a bunch of methanol in his garage.

I couldn't care less what he runs his cars on, but brewing that stuff can be dangerous if not done with proper care.

the story is not how the government is out to get you. They're saying, if you do it, use some common sense and do it in a place that won't hurt others if you blow yourself up.

No, not a matter of time. People have died and been hurt fires or explosions in non-industrial biodiesel preparation. It's quite tempting to mix hot methoxide and VO using a paint mixer and drill instead of an explosion proof mixer. The sparks at the brushes make a possible ignition source, as well as possible sparking on the trigger switch. It's unnecesary, but the motive to cut corners at the expense of safety is there. Process equipment that is 'informally' engineered and would never get past OSHA is quite conceivable. One of the reasons that I presently stick to grease only.

Exactly....the number of people doing this is TINY. How about we do a report on Christmas Tree fires instead

More likely to spontaneously combust. Someone else on this forum made the same argument, and the documentation she provided didn't support her position that home bio diesel production is a credible threat. Getting into brewing biodiesel is not a spur of the moment decision, and I feel the vast majority of home brewers are reasonably cautious in the manufacturing process. Maybe a comparison should be made between the number of fires started by bio d producers, and people who burn their houses down with home deep fryers. I would be just as scared of a bonehead with a few 5 gallon cans of gas in his garage, as I would be a home brewer with methanol.
