GM to kill Pontiac
Well looks like it finally is happening GM is really starting to streamline. Am waiting to hear what they are getting rid of next. I still feel bad for all the people who will be without work.

So they are going to ditch Pontiac? First they said they were, but then last week or so, I heard somewhere that they were not. Hmm.

It's a shame.
I don't take any pleasure in the demise of the Big 3.

I have had a lot of fun in Pontiacs from my parents 1963 Catalina (what a nice big fast car that was) to my gf's 1970 GTO to my 1967 GTO convertible. I will miss this division. It is a shame just like when they closed Oldsmobile a lot of history will be gone.
GM did the typical GM thing and could not figure out WHAT a Pontiac was. Was it the sporty division? The family division? The secreatary Special division (ala the Grand AM) They should have concentrated on building Frebirds and GTOs and not have tried to be an upscale Chevy. Who is going to be next? I am guessing Hummer and Saturn and maybe Buick will bite the dust leaving Chevy and Caddy as the only ones left standing.

I belive that hummer has already been confirmed as closing down. I think they are still mulling over Saturn. I know that Volvo has been confirmed.

This is going to be like another New Coke vs Classic Coke situation.
They are going for now...but one day they will be back.

Well, that's close
Volvo is close, but you probably meant Saab. Saab is going as is Saturn and Hummer. Find new homes or get shut down. Well, I do think it is sad, but it has been a long time coming. Goverment mandates, foreign imports, and don't forget the union and design by committee, man you can only carry so much.

New coke is back? IIRC, people protested enough and they cut production off.

I thought Pontiac had a pretty defined brand identity in the past 10 years or so - they were positioned as GM's sporty division and had a number of products that were not found elsewhere in the GM lineup - the G8 and the Vibe - as well as the Pontiac Solstice that does have a Saturn version, but I don't know if Saturn is going to survive either. I didn't understand why they selected Pontiac for the cull, and I figured that Buick would be a good one to take out because they overlap both Chevy and Cadillac in terms of positioning. However, Pontiac is only worth about 10% of GM's sales volume. It comes down to the numbers.

My dad told me a lot of that popularity comes from the fact that the last emperor had a Buick.

From what we have seen of the Last Emperor, I think we know what kind of bad decisions he made.

I read in the paper a group including several Saturn dealers were interested in buying the mark.
If I were GM, I'd have Saturn, Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac for the American market. Saturn would be my AtoB brand, Chevy my Acura/BMW brand, GMC my truck brand, and Caddy my Jag/performance brand. The Corvette would move to Caddy, with a ~$15K or so price jump to cover the better quality. A Z06 would be priced comparatively with cars it competes with, like 911 turbos, etc.. Saturn would lose the roadster, which would become Chevy's new powerhouse. Chevy would also get a sport sedan, probably AWD. 2 entry level vehicles, one a sedan and one a smaller car, probably based off a Saturn, but with more amenities.

That'll teach 'em what happens when begging to the government for help. The people out-of-work will have to take their lumps too, because of it.
