Its not good but talks of a pandemic are at best premature. The problem is for the last 10-15 years people have been wondering if a nasty virus from an animal population could infect people. Then said virus would be very lethal and can now be transmitted into the general population. The really bad part of all of this is that the virus mutates fast really fast. And the fact that this is a new virus means that very few people will be immune to it. Add all of this up with the fact that people travel a lot and cities are very close quarters.....could be bad. CDC is on red alert and the WHO is about to declare something big. Official virus designation is H1N1.

isn't death also involved with regular flu?

I've never gotten a flu vaccination nor caught it... should I be sent in for examination?..

Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 killed about 50 million I think. It was an H1N1 virus, which I believe is the same kind currently causing problems. That's a pretty good reason to want to limit the current virus since its virulence is currently unknown.

Here in Guatemala they are checking into the first possible confirmed infection. This person was in Mexico last week.

Am I worried, yes, lots of travel between Guatemala and Mexico and now this is case in investigation, well........

I don't think it is a bored media at all. I will say this pandemic talk is early but virologists have been scared for years of viruses jumping species. Its very very bad.

I went to the video store this weekend looking for a copy of "The Stand" on DVD. My friend and I use to watch it all the time when we were kids, and thought it would be worth a watch on DVD instead of the old VHS his parents had. Sadly the store did not have the DVD so I ordered it.

Anyway, I woke up this morning and according to the media I will be living out that movie faster then they can ship it to me.

Everyone lets all wound up over this, "Its Capitan Trips all over again! we are all going to DIE."

seriously, there was a swine flu outbreak in the 70s in the US, however, the vacine killed more than the flu that year:

On the cold afternoon of February 5, 1976, an Army recruit told his drill instructor at Fort Dix that he felt tired and weak but not sick enough to see military medics or skip a big training hike.

Within 24 hours, 19-year-old Pvt. David Lewis of Ashley Falls, Mass., was dead, killed by an influenza not seen since the plague of 1918-19, which took 500,000 American lives and 20 million worldwide.

Two weeks after the recruit's death, health officials disclosed to America that something called "swine flu" had killed Lewis and hospitalized four of his fellow soldiers at the Army base in Burlington County.

The ominous name of the flu alone was enough to touch off civilian fear of an epidemic. And government doctors knew from tests hastily conducted at Dix after Lewis' death that 500 soldiers had caught swine flu without falling ill.

Any flu able to reach that many people so fast was capable of becoming another worldwide plague, the doctors warned, raising these questions:

Does America mobilize for mass inoculations in time to have everybody ready for the next flu season? Or should the country wait to see if the new virus would, as they often do, get stronger to hit harder in the second year?

Thus was born what would become known to some medical historians as a fiasco and to others as perhaps the finest hour of America's public health bureaucracy.

Only young Lewis died from the swine flu itself in 1976. But as the critics are quick to point out, hundreds of Americans were killed or seriously injured by the inoculation the government gave them to stave off the virus.
