"stimulus money" spending in local school district
http://www.weau.com/home/headlines/44094137.html
What kind of crap is that? School district gets 3.5 million. 1 million for funding free/reduced price lunch 100,000 for preschools 2.5 million for special education services. As a former student at North High school, I remember about 30 individuals in the specal education class's. I think there's 1800 students total There were 4? or more teachers in that room all the time. The students of that class rode around the building with special equipment to suit their needs. Not junk, but actually very nice stuff. Adult size tricycles, special gym equipement, and other specialized stuff. They appear to be very well taken care of, and get the attention that they need. The metal shop teacher needs to charge a large fee for students to be in the class, because it's so underfunded. You buy your own metal. Auto shop class has some junk tire changer, worn out hand tools, and recycled wheel weights. The computers are painfully slow, at least 6 years old... Bathrooms are a mess... sinkhole in the parking lot (may or may not have been "fixed" since I attended"... All these issues that effect many, and this is how they choose to spend the money. I wish the district would do the most good for the most people, instead of spending money where it already invests apparently large amounts. Oh, and our Governor declared a public health state of emergency... Dang H1N1... ~Nate

Dude, those special education kids live in a world of misery we can only speculate about.
Sometimes it's not anout the dollars and cents, these are real people with some serious issues. My neighbor has a son with Dystonia, he is one of those well taken care of special education kids. It's heartbreaking to see how hard this young man tries to fit into a world that barely tolerates him. Yet, he somehow manages to get almost striaght A's in school. I suspect he will be a higher functioning member of society in spite of his Dystonia than many of the lazy "normal" kids who barely graduated. Btw, my computer is 8yrs old, and have recycled wheel weights myself(it's just a chunk of lead). It sounds like shop class is doing a great job of teaching the value of a dollar, and what to expect in the real world. With the economy being the way it is, it's good to see people making do with what they have. It sounds like that's what your school is doing. Good for them. Just my .02. Yes, I know the spelling could be better, but it's late and I'm tired. Last edited by Jerry Cohen; 04-30-2009 at 11:21 PM. |

I know this, I compleatly agree that there is no way that I could possibly understand what they are going through. I wasnt trying to make it sound like that, and I apologize to anyone who takes offence at that. I was trying (however poorly) to indicate that I would rather see the money spread evenly over the underfunded programs throughout the district. It pains me to see the majority of taxpayers money being spent on a minority that already (to the outsider peering in)is being taken care of.

Computer issue, painfully slow, and utterly inadequate for anything other then word processing...
Wheel weights, i guess... Equipment=hunter center pull tire changer. Gaurentied to scratch AL rims, and likely for the rod to come off and re-arrange someones face... ~Nate

Exactly! From each according to his ability and to each according to his needs! That's the new fresh idea and it's about time we change!

I'm sure the crack dealers are going to love the $3.5 million O gave them from the man to get marble curbs installed in front of their cribs. Hell yeah!

Yeah, I guess white trash doesn't exist in some people's wasp existence.
Only crack dealers who have cribs are leaches, huh? Right.

CT has some serious issues ahead of it, and people here are going to have three choices. Pay now. Pay more later. Leave with most everyone else who isn't at either end of the financial spectrum. The marble curbs sounds more like Providence under Buddy Cianci

Boy,was I enthusiastic, right near the ferry terminal and 95,I couldn't miss, think of the traffic! I did not occur to me that people would want to get thru Bridgeport as soon as they could but I learned. At least I could get some decent fried chicken,AND there were plenty of liquor stores. Last I heard that edifice was hosting a tire repair shop and a "metalworking"facility specialising in barbeques fashioned from used 55 gallon drums.

Most special needs kids these days are mainstreamed with their "typical" peers as much as possible, often with an aid and often getting pulled out of class for extra attention in areas they need help with. I can only speak for kids like my son with Ds, but even as recently as 10 years ago these kids were generally written off unless the parents became a big thorn in the side of the teachers and superintendent. Then, amazingly to some, if you taught these kids and put them amongst other "typical" kids they could learn. There are obviously differing abilities and capacities in that spectrum and in some cases mainstreaming doesn't work. But in the long run educating these kids and teaching them a skill allows them to become more self-sufficient, less reliant on state aid and often independent.
