so, filling out this college ap
and it asks me for my intended major...
I'm still on the fence, but UCF does offer a degree in photography which is something I'd like to get a serious career in. so, my internet family... what do I do? I'm going to finish the rest of the ap and skip those questions for the time being. I do think I should call the advisors there at UCF and inquire or even go out there. |

Keep on going after your engineering degree and try to intertwine photography with that.

Does it really matter what you fill out on the application? Can't you change it when you actually enroll or even later?
Can you put undecided on it? Remember, many people with college degrees don't use the title of their degree directly in their job. I would stick with the current degree path. You can always start your own photography business on the side later. No degree nescessary. Can you minor in it? Good idea in talking to an advisor.

Rest assured, you're not alone and college admissions officers aren't going to hold you to that answer. It's done for two reasons; Census to make sure they are not overfilling one degree area and to possibly steer someone away from a degree program that they may have no way of completing academically

I would pick something that I could make a living at right off the bat. I know a few photographers and they are still waiting for their big break. They are pretty talented too. Talk to an advisor about how strict the school is regarding majors, and if its easy to switch at some point. Some schools will eject students if they want to switch majors (due to poor grades, etc) and theres no room in the selected program.

I am going to see if they have a degree for technology education since that is my plan B.. but I need something to bank on since teaching doesn't pay(well it does but you can't pay bills with childrens laughter) I can take photography classes and junk as my minor. I'm transferring with an AA from a Florida community college so I'm guaranteed admittance and all these other things Last edited by TheDon; 05-06-2009 at 11:33 AM. |

My wife has three degrees in photography, including a masters, all from a well renowned university. She has never been able to use her photographic skills to produce a steady income. The problem with photography is, it is a self-proclaimed field of expertise. You can buy a camera, get good with it and boom! You are a photographer and able to get the same amount of $$ or more than a schooled photographer. Unless you want to teach at a university or college, skip that curriculum. Your best bet would be to hire a calculus tutor and get back to engineering...

this is EXACTLY true....
i have a photography degree through what was then the nations #3 communications school at ithaca college. not much else in my life tops this as mistake material. keep it as a minor, if that. unless you want to lick some studio photographers a$$ as his/her assistant for 8 years before your big break, all the while watching the 18 year old drop outs with no degrees and a cheap camera get famous fast without you. besides art, my plan was to become a photo ethnographer with my anthropology minor. easier to just do it than to get a degree in it and then do it. get a degree that leads to a job that allows you the time and money to pursue photography (and other noble arts) at the same time. there are tons of famous writers and artists who do it this way, and are much happier with school bills they can pay. The difference is it took me a few years and more education to catch up with them. You won't make as much right out of school but you do have the ability to make about as much as the average Joe after a bit more time and education. Plus, this would give you the oppurunity to pursue photography on the side where you can make a lot more money! (Weekends, nights, and summers) Wedding season...here we come!

the thing is.. I don't want to be an engineer. That is what my family wanted me to do and pushed me towards it. Sure I'm good with mechanical things like animatronics and rc cars but thats about it. I can draft as well but thats it.

A degree in photography isn't going to get you anywhere. Might as well blow the $$$ on a Delorean or something.
Get an apprenticeship with a studio that focuses on something your interested in and you'll learn more in a week than 3 years of college. I feel like I've completely wasted my time with a political science degree. Other than the piece of paper, whoop di doo.

lol.. I like blowing money on deloreans..
I'm getting an apprenticeship at an animatronics/prototype lab. The second lead guy there said he doesn't have a degree in anything engineering but something in theater design. .. I've already learned how to make molds and cast parts from them. woo Last edited by TheDon; 05-06-2009 at 12:37 PM. |
