Free Computers???????

So I got my mail off the front step. I was expecting an order of business cards, but there was a second box. I opened the box without reading the label figuring it was samples from the business card company.

It turns out that there are two lenovo ideapad computers in the box. There's a packing slip that has my name on it with info for how to contact the returns center.

There's also a sticker on the box that says "If you did not order lenovo product call: 1(866)428-4465. You may be the victim of fraud and identity theft."

So ... what should I do now?

Any clue as to the means of payment? Somebody steal your info. and have it shipped to your house and planned to pick it up themselves not knowing you're generally there?

That's pretty freaky.

Sounds like identity theft. Check your CC and accounts for strange activity, and pull your credit reports. (from all 3 agencies)

If its a mistake you just got some free computers.:D

Call the identity theft hotline NOW! 1-877-IDTHEFT (438-4338)

Part of the stimulus package?

You are not alone: http://lenovoblogs.com/connections/?m=200902

(Scan down to the "Fraud Advisory" section.)

Interesting to read the claim that, in some cases, the fraudsters arranged to have the victims ship the computers to them using bogus return labels!

According to that Lenovo blog, the number goes to Lenovo, and those advisory labels are part of their response to the scams.

By the way, I posted that for general interest, and as a warning that a scammer might try to contact the victim pretending to be from Lenovo.

Job #1, of course, should be to do as Medmech says, and get the identity theft wheels turning.

There's no way for a private citizen to trace the 1-866 number. However, since the fraud was committed through the US Mail and is more than 50.00, call the Postal Inspectors. They are like Gila monsters, they LOVE this stuff!! :D

I pity the guy who messes with them. I had a guy try to defraud me once after I had proof that he cashed the USPS MO and god the guy started calling ME after the Post Office Inspectors paid a visit!

"It was all a mistake, the dog ate the recipt and my brother picked it up, then had an accident and a head injury and forgot to tell me please let the USPS know that I'm not doing anything wrong......"

I let them eat him alive after I got my parts...late. He tried to screw me, and apparently others. I followed up with the USPS. Too bad for him.

So sic thosae guys on the Lenovo fraudsters.

Check your CC and be aware that you have 60 days to report fraudulent activity...But don't wait!!

My credit card was used too. I got through and spoke with a rep who gave me a RMA#. I'm waiting for the email of the prepaid shipping label so I can drop it off at a UPS location.

The rep said if the label doesn't come through, they can schedule a UPS pickup at my location.

I already notified my credit card about the transaction.

We'll see what happens with the return labels now. I'm not spending $28 to return something I didn't order.

Think how much unhappier you might be if it had been another sort of unordered, unexpected package - and some well-intentioned authorities had come breaking down your door.

Just trying to cheer you up!

Damn, that sucks! At least you've got the CC situation under control.

Hatterasguy 05-06-2009 09:21 PM

You should cancel all your cards and get new cards.

mpolli 05-07-2009 01:46 AM

I would be skeptical about that 866#. Could be a new type of phishing. I would find their # independently.
