In a recent survey of Gun Death Rates in US States based on 2006 CDC data

The analysis reveals that the five states with the highest per capita gun death rates were Louisiana, Alabama, Alaska, Mississippi, and Nevada.

Wow, 44 thru 50, all bad old liberal "gun control" states. Looks like reasonable regulation of firearms actually works. It's a wonder what a well-regulated milita can accomplish when attempted.

Does this include accidental shootings? Or is the number so high because of the low population in the state?

Per capita. That means a ratio of people that died by gunshot vs total people in state.

Yeah that first graph is a bit misleading. I think you also need to look at the total number of people killed by guns as well...

37 in Alaska which came in 3rd...
889 in New York which came in 46th....

Surprise surprise; those states with the lower percentage of gun ownership had lower gun death rates. The real trick is to see if those deaths were due to accidental, murder or self defense; and to correlate those figures into an opinion that either says guns protect a person or guns accidentally kill more people than they protect.

These are gun deaths which I assume include suicides which are probably a good portion of them. So you can't assume they're all murders or even killings of other people. I think Nevada has one of the highest suicide rates in the country if not the highest, and I've seen stats that clearly show that households with guns have a much higher death rate, either due to suicide or domestic violence.

suicide is murder- self murder. And if you did not have a gun handy I'd bet there would at least some percentage drop in suicide. If you make it tougher- no matter what it is- less people do it.

Naturally. Guns simply make it easier to kill people, including yourself.
