Lets take an everyday experience that most (men) have been through...boot camp.

I'm sure that everyone that's been there remembers the hodge-podge of humanity we were all standing next to, in line, when the DIs first addressed us...

Some couldn't say their own name without drooling, others had their head spit-shined and polished...everyone was at a different level of readiness.

The DIs' job was to make everyone of us into one, cohesive unit...capable of doing the job given to us and better yet, our buddys' if he was taken out.

And if you think about it and remember...everyone one of us rose to that level...and those that were already at that level had to suffer with the rest of us when the GFs were getting the squad into pushups or chinups or square-corners or whatever the DIs had us doing when one failed and rest had to bear the brundt of the punishment...

But, when everyone met the challenge...how did we feel? Even the guy at the top since day one was as happy as the guy at the end who just got his act together...

Why are we having such a hard time taking that kind of philosophy and bringing it to the kids?

Structure. It works wonders.

Discipline. It works wonders.

Pride in a job well done. It works wonders.

And it sticks for a lifetime.

Instead, we act as if we're sticking the black kids on a rack and torturing them to give us a B, or God forbid, an A- or better...

And to hold back the lily-white ones! Oh my God!

Give me a break.

I'm willing to bet, just like the guys in a platoon, those kids could give a da*n about color or creed...they want to all fit in and structure and perseverance is the keys to getting kids to be part of the group and to help that group along...

Someone figured it out...now we have to kick the slackers out of the way and do what's right.

Not what feels good.

I think the data confirms what I've said in this thread. Whites benefit from increased educational opportunities as much as blacks, but given equal opportunity, the black-white achievement gap remains.

This school in Harlem claims to have eliminated the achievement gap by giving its black students an educational advantage over white students in NYC: 50-100% more classroom instruction.

In Turkey a male citizen must do mandatory military service even if you legally reside in another country. If you pay $5k you are excused.

If you really read the article, you would not have missed the point that what the school tries to do is inculculate the values that suburban white children pick up in their home environments, values that ghetto black children are not exposed to in thier own chaotic home lives, so I would assume exposing non-disadvantaged youth to the same would be redundant, and a waste of time. The school is giving black children values the white children already have. The result is a level playing field. BTW, are you saying that whites will always excel over blacks, because they are white? Just wondering.

How do you know that it would be redundant and a waste of time? Has it been tried?

What values are those? Didn't President Obama's own church support a separate value system for blacks that included "Disavowal of the Pursuit of Middleclassness"?

It's odd how history comes full circle sometimes. During the Reconstruction period, Northern educators tried to do the same thing with newly freed Southern blacks, and the only reason they failed is because the South eventually succeeded in running the teachers out of town on a rail:
