Tell me more about that firmware please, Medmech. Are you using it? Will it work on a "WRT-54G" also?

My work paid for the Cisco box, and I got the Access Point for free. The only thing I paid for is my HP switch so that I could wire the whole house.

Yes, depending on the version. It allows you to do advanced routing, adjust wireless output, QoS and much more.

Hate to say this, but ANYTHING electronic (component-wise) has a definate finite life span...capacitors (even the SMD stuff) dry out and when you're working with computers/routers and the like, PLL'd-gear depend heavily on timing to play nice with one another...

5-6 years on a router is good...but you're pushing your luck and patience to the edge if you're expecting flawless performance after that...

Break down, upgrade to the latest and greatest, then stick the old one on the table at the end of the driveway and let one of the neighborhood compu-geeks have it for $2.00...or give it to the street-hockey kids...and sit back, pop a cool one and watch the kids have at it...it's not worth the hassle to keep running.

Timing is critical in some applications...maybe the SW in your unit isn't fully functional due to the time-difference between the HW manufacture date and SW-functionality date...some, but not all, of the SW is playing "hookey" 'cause the HW isn't up to "speed" with the new stuff being run on it...

Just another thought-dribble...

That sounds like more of a DNS issue or your laptop, try another puter and see what happens when you are plugged directly in to the modem.

Google maps queries data off a lot of simultaneous servers, so a lot of concurrent connections which might overload the wimpy CPU in a consumer grade router/NAT device....thus the lockup. I've seen it before.

Home networking equipment was advancing quickly for a while, but now it has slowed down. Enterprise stuff might be a bit overkill, but small business class is well worth it. It can be the difference between a device that performs reliably, and one that just doesn't work right straight out of the box.

A basic router with 100Mbit or 1Gbit ethernet should stay "usable" for a long time to come. The only people that need higher than a 100Mbit connection in a real life situation would be those who move a lot of data between PC's at home and would benefit from the Gigabit link. In terms of web browsing, very few home internet connections are much over 20-25Mbit.....I think the US average is like 3-4Mbit or something.

That's the size of it. Ours is 4.8Mbit (sold as 6 max). I do occasionally perform very large data copies over the LAN, so the Gig-E is worth having. Especially at $90 for a switch and $20 for a NIC.
