When liberals use hate-speech

I was hoping some of our liberal members would post condemnation of Wanda Sykes' comments at the correspondents' gala. Sadly, no.

Since when is it a liberal attribute to wish someone dead? I thought liberals described them selves as THE champions of individual's rights. Sadly that only applies to liberals who speak in favor of liberal causes. When Rush is the target, then all that gushy liberalism flies out the window.

By comparison, when a sports guy made a joke about Pelosi, and Reid, he was forced to apologize under threat of losing his job.

What made the whole affair at the correspondent's diner even more appalling was that the self-proclaimed guarantors of correct speech roared with laughter, as did the President, himself. I wonder if the reaction would have been the same if Ms Sykes, had wished Mr. Obama would have kidney failure. Probably not as funny.

OTOH, a lot of what she said was very clever and funny; the Rush comments were politically driven, over the top, and out of bounds. Where is the outrage?

What do you think?

THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE IF

WE COULD ALL COME TOGETHER
behind liberal ideals

By comparison, Bill Maher was given the Smothers brothers treatment when THEY were in control.

Wanda will get a left wing pass . . . the right wing will fume and fuss . . . the universe remains in balance.

what exactly did she say? (i personally find her talentless)

She went after Limbaugh as being treasonous, the 20th highjacker, substance abuser, and hoped that he croaked for all the things that he's said about wanting the President's plans to fail . . . the things that haven't been repudiated by certain politcos.

Political humor can be very funny. when I was in high school I was a political junky, but I had no idea what side of the spectrum I belonged to. I had a pretty funny shirt that had a picture of red line markups of a remark written by Bush. Looked like I wrote it! (I've never been known for my English skills) I thought it was funny, I told my English teacher there was hope for me, because even I could be the president.

I would say that as the Bush era progressed, the jokes got more and more mean, and sooner or later they stopped being funny to me. I also became more Right leaning as I got older. But with the Obama era in hand I haven't heard many Obama jokes. if you tell one you are a racist. and sadly most of the funny ones i've hear are racist.

I don't think this is because the man is so great. I just think people are so in love with him no one that is funny will make fun of him... sadly the best Obama jokes have been told by Obama himself. His is actually kinda funny, more funny then Wanda Sikes. thats for sure!

ALL hate speech is bad. Left, right, up, down, gay, straight, colored or colorless, pinkskin or Andorian, Romulan or Klingon, Commie or Baptist, believer or atheist, ad infinitam ad nauseam...

One of the verities of existence.

Hate speech is different from criticism. Focus not on what people are, but what they do or say.

Call that anything you want. You will be right. Because you are describing behavior and how you feel about it.

Condemn her for going after Limbaugh? Not a chance.

I didn't find her line about wishing his kidneys would fail to be very funny, although it was obviously meant as a joke. I did like her delivery on that line, though.

Given her audience that evening, I appreciated the angry tone in Sykes' voice when she went after Limbaugh. I think she showed exactly what she thinks of him. Her angry comments about Limbaugh were as much an attack on the media hacks in the audience as they were an attack on him. I, for one, am sick and tired of people in the media pretending that Limbaugh is anything other than a mean-spirited, illogical, and DISHONEST jerk. His commentary has no value. It is wrong for the media to pretend otherwise. The whole thing is preposterous.

Over the weekend, Joe Klein went on Howard Kurtz's TV show and called Limbaugh a liar, which he obviously is. Here's a link: http://crooksandliars.com/john-amato/times-joe-klein-says-rush-limbaugh-deli

Howard Kurtz, once again, came to Limbaugh's defense saying that "'lies' is a strong word" as if maybe Limbaugh isn't a liar. Preposterous.

Limbaugh has become a multi-millionaire spewing dishonest hate on his radio show. You may recall, he referred to then 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton as the "White House dog." Sykes owes him no apology. You should continue your never ending quest for double standards somewhere else, IMHO.

By the way, do you also find it sad that none of the conservative members on the forum have posted condemnation of the mean-spirited comments made by Rush, Newt, Hannity, or any of the others?

Personally, I think its hilarious that you characterize anybody who doesn't agree with your position as a "liberal", when, in reality, you don't honestly know what a "liberal" is. Admit it.

There was a member who behaved in similar fashion a few years ago. Everybody was a "liberal" and his goal was to "irritate liberals". A real enlightened fellow. You should strive to be less like him.

BTW, you might not know that this was a correspondent's dinner where it was open season on the insults. Clearly, this woman was a bit over the top..........as judged solely by the reaction of the crowd. She crossed the fine line where it's just not funny............reason being is that she just might have been serious.

As I posted, I found many of her comments to be funny, clever and witty.

I couldn't care less if she, you or anyone criticizes Limbaugh; he's a big boy, and can take care of himself.
I am amazed that you don't see the obvious double standard--the denizens of free speech engaged in hate speech. I would criticize it all. If hate speech is a bad thing, then left or right hate speech should be called what it is. What else do you call it when you hope someone dies--love?

As for what is a liberal--its hard to know as they keep changing w2hat they want to be called. In the 30's they were "progressives", but when that got tainted, they switched to "liberals",, whatever you call them, they are big government totalitarians--they tolerate no free speech but their owm.
Sure agree that its OK to attack Limbaugh, and soon you will lose your rights to free speech. Remember free speech requires that you support the rights of the people whom you hate--or else no one's speech is assured.
It doesn't take long for "liberals" to begin the name-calling. I can't recall that I have engaged in the type of sarcastic post you made. About the worse I do is apply a label of liberal, but I do not think I have ever made a personal attack. You may prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

Again, it was a correspondents dinner. They engaged in bashing each other...........party or political influence was not a factor. Sorry you couldn't see it.

Yes, she was over the top...........the crowd agreed with you.

Allowing Wanda Sykes to exercise her right to say what she thinks of Limbaugh threatens our right to free speech? You lost me.

Has anyone even remotely suggested otherwise?

The thing I don't get is why you think that only "liberals" do that sort of thing. You seem to perceive double standards where none exist. IMHO.
