Unhappy Haemophiliac or homosexual, what's the difference?..

http://www.cphpost.dk/news/1-latest-news/45661-miscommunication-plays-role-in-norwegians-death.html

Quote:
Health staff trying to understand a bleeding Norwegian patient, who said he was a haemophiliac, thought he said he was homosexual and sent him home without necessary treatment

(....) said they had received information that when the 25-year-old presented himself at the hospital on Monday with his injury explaining he was a haemophiliac, hospital staff mistook him for saying he was a homosexual and sent him home. The Danish word for haemophilia is ‘hćmofili’ while the word ‘homofil’ means homophile or homosexual.

(....) the young man was found dead less than 24 hours later at his accommodation in Sydhavn of a brain haemorrhage.
Now that is bad luck!

Holy cow! What's the deal? Bleeding homosexuals are not treated but bleeding hemophiliacs are?

Hemo's are treated differently because their blood doesn't clot well. As such, a cut that you and I might shrug off might bleed for days for them. If you are a homo AND not a hemo, your blood clots normally and a cut might not be fatal. OTOH, if you are a hemo, there might be different procedures to take care of the clotting.

I know that, but if a person goes to the emergency room for bleeding, its seems regardless of hemo or homo they would take care of the person.

I didn't read the article, perhaps it looked like a superficial wound that would close with a bandaid.

It wasn't that they treated him weird based on what he said he was, they misunderstood what he said he was. If they heard hemophiliac I am sure they would have done something. Seems like if you know you are a bleeder, get conked in the head, maybe you should be concerned when they said "go home".

It's occurred to me that if he was already bleeding internally, that he might not have been thinking clearly.

Also if he wasn't aware of the internal bleeding he might have thought he would be alright until morning.

IMO the intake nurse, or whoever it was he spoke to should have asked more questions. None the less, it's a very sad story.

These mistakes and worse, happen in the US even though we pay mega dollars for medical care.

I went to a hospital in San Diego by ambulance and even though the ER had been told that I was showing possible signs of stroke, they gave me some potassium and a shot of morphine and sent me home. I continued to have impaired speech intermittently, so I chewed a handful of Aspirin and went to UCSD medical center, where I was diagnosed with a small stroke.

I didn't sue, but sometimes I feel bad that I didn't make more of an issue of the situation. It might have made a difference for another patient who came in after me.
