Battery Jump Box Recommendation
I'm looking for recommendations on battery jump boxes. I had one from Target (a Vector barnd, I think) that I hated because it didn't have the guts to start a car. So it was useless. It was rated at 650 Peak Amps if memory serves. Maybe there was something wrong with it or the charger. I got rid of it.
But I hear so many people say they are great that I'm itching to buy another one. I have three vehicles, a boat and two Seadoo's so I frequently have a battery issue on something. I'm leaning towards a Sears Die-Hard 1150 Peak Amp model. They're around $100 on sale. Do you have one you really like?

I have one that I bought from Advance Auto. I've had it for 5 or 6 years now & it's still going strong. I don't recall the brand off hand.
It has saved my ass and others a few times. I did have to use it on my waverunner once. I put it in the water and it didn't start. The biggest complaint I've heard is they don't last. I guess I got lucky. It didn't cost anywhere near $100. Maybe half that. Danny

I bought this one a few years ago, $90 from one of the AutoZoo stores. Says 450 amps instant power.
Air compressor, led light and an AC outlet too. I haven't used it much, but works every time I did.

PEAK vs. AVERAGE
PEAK looks impressive...but all that tells you is that you're "X" amount of seconds away from having to run to the basement and reset the breaker when it eventually will trip. The higher the number, the quicker the 20 Amp breaker is going to *SNAP!* AVERAGE is the number you should be concerned with...how long will it keep kicking out the right amount of power before either the vehicle starts or the box burns/blows out/up. Look for the duty cycle on the box...that's what you need to pay attention to. VERY SIMILIAR to the instructions on how to start your car and keep from buying a starter every other month. Crank for a while, rest it for a while LONGER... That's all. Good luck!

I like Sears auto stuff. they have cheap, not so cheap, decent and nice. depending on the depth of your pocket. but there at least you get a choice. I bought the middle of the road unit about 7 years ago and it works fine, has a trickle charge, regular charge, fast charge and high amp boost.

Get one at Sams, they are about 50 bucks.
The best thing I have, but only good at home of course, is a charger that will start the car. Get it off 250 amps fast though, because you can hear the battery boiling pretty quick.

I have not had to jump start a modern car in many years, so please excuse me if this is a dumb question:
Are those battery pack jump starter things safe for cars with computers (i.e. any car made in the last 20 years)? If I need to jump start a lawn mower or tractor, I either use another tractor or my 1985 300D. It's nice having old stuff sometimes. |

It works without any ill effects, but I am sure there are some cases where it might be a bad idea to try jump starting a hybrid...
