W123 update
Only two W123s seen so far: one nice-looking, gold 123 sedan in Soweto...couldn't tell what if it was gas or diesel. The other, a pea-soup green sedan with the round Euro headlights like I have on my wagon. Couldn't determine gas or diesel on that one either.
As far as VW Combis, I've spent the last couple of days zooming all over the countryside in one...the hills are pretty steep around Joburg and that little unit runs out of steam pretty fast on a hill. Here's a pic of it when we were at the Lion park (some lions too):
