We went car shopping last night and........

Test drove a 2004 C320 4Matic. Fell in love with it and where all ready to buy this one owner, non smoker, clean titled black on tan with every option from the factory untill the dealer gave us some numbers. Not very happy on that one. The car is selling for $18,000. I told him if you give me at least $7,000 for my sons C280 we will deal. They wont give anything more then $6,600.. So now after 2 hours of time at the dealeship and the sales women telling me how that my tires are not new and pretty much telling me "Your car sucks and our car is the best" as my son put it. In the end we decided decided to put the car up for sale on craigslist and to then take what we get and have our Independant shop head down to a Mehans(I think thats how its spelled) auto auction where me my son and him will take a look and find a new car. Anyone have any experience with these auctions? I also have my C280 Sport with 83,000 miles up for sale. PM for any info if anyone is interested.

You're crying over $400.00? If you list it on craigslist for 7k, you will come out the same with the tax savings of trading it in.

As for the price of the C-class, yikes. That's what I paid for my 2004 E500 4-matic wagon, and it was one owner immaculate car with only 47k on it. This one better have less than 10,000 miles on it to justify that price.

I'd give up looking at a big dealer, and try to find one privately or at small low overhead operations. I bet they only paid $10-12k for that car at auction.

Did you even try to haggle on the price of the car itself, by the way?

I used that tire line all the time when I used to sell cars at a dealer. Or I would pop the hood, and point out the dry rotted belts and ask when was the last time they serviced the transmission, flushed the coolant, etc.

I'll have to remember that if I'm ever trading something in, Tyler.

I tried to buy a '97 E300, which was not running so I could not test drive it. It was a used car at a new VW dealer. I asked if they had any records for transmission service, and they said that they would check. They also said that they would call me once it came back from the shop and was drivable. They didn't. I called them the day that they said that it would be done, and they had sold it to someone else. Shame, because I was probably going to give them their asking price. I liked the car.

So what's wrong with the C280 that prompts you to want to get rid of it?

Nothing is wrong at all with it. Just had its service B done. Everything runs great. No knocks, No rattles, No leaks. I am selling it because I made a bet with my son that if he got a 3.5 GPA this semester I would buy him a new car. I lost as you can see.

I tried that as well but the dealer would not budge that much. Like you said before I am going to look at auction wit my Mercedes Specialist. That way he can pick it out and my tech can look and see if its a good one. We have done this a couple times before and have been very happy with the cars.

.
Its not so much the $400.00 It is more when I looked at the records I saw 2 owners. First one new-40,000 miles and the second 40,000-59,000 miles. That second owner has me worried a little bit. Why buy a car and drive it so little miles?

It was owned by an old lady who only drove it to church on sundays. The dealer probably mentioned it.

Auctions are hit and miss, my truck was from an auction and it will be my last. Not that their is anything wrong with it, just more than I anticipated for the age and mileage. I got stuck doing the major service and it needs tires, that stuff adds up. Remember the good trade ins are CPO'd on the dealers lot, the not so hot ones go to the auction.

$400 isn't much, not really worth the hassle of trying to sell it yourself. Also $18k seems like a ton of money for an 04 C class, how many miles are on it?

If you really want a clean low mileage C class your local MB dealer is the best place to get one, unless you can find one private. Auctions are really hit and miss.

Like everything its a hit or miss unfortuantly. I am going to try and sell it myself first on craigslist. If it does not sell in a couple weeks then I might just trade it in. It has around 60,000 Miles.

I can claim the win in suspicious car history....I am the 6th owner of my 1990 300E.....it is from Las Vegas.....I got it with 133k on it....barely 7k a year. No service records, however, it runs great, and is in very good shape. I've put over 5k on it in the past 6 months with no real issues....it seems to have been pretty well maintained most of its life....it even has a fairly new radiator and such. (probably important in nevada! )

On the topic of this thread....I hate car shopping....it nearly drove me insane trying to find the 300E....I looked at so many over priced junky cars....then I came across mine just in time. I don't trust dealers at all, they are just trying to squeeeeeze people's wallets as hard as possible. 18k for a 2004 is way too high, especially for a C class.

Have you sold a car on craigslist before? Jeez it's one of the most frustrating things I've ever had to do, too many people flake on you and when they do show up, usually lowball you by a factor of thousands of dollars. Good luck getting more money from a craigslister

I've had fantastic luck on craigslist personally, but perhaps the quality of people in my area are better.

The three cars I listed on there during the past few months sold within 24 hours of putting the listing up. All 3 for the full asking price on the ad. In every ad I put 'please no low ballers or tire kickers'.
