Gas in a diesel engine...

I just saw an ad for a seemingly nice looking '84 300DT that had a blown engine because some lady filled it up with gas. Not that I'm interested in buying that car but I was just wondering what happens to the poor engine when you accidentally put gas in it with diesel!?

I would think that, depending on the mixture, it wouldn't have a chance to actually hurt the engine. Running a blend can create a host of problems, but accidentally filling the tank with RUG would probably be enough to caus ethe engine to not run at all. Drain the tank and lines, replace with diesel, bleed out the injectors, and off you go.

It usually simply stops running; fairly quickly too although it prob depends upon the actual blend. Timing gets WAY off as explosive gasoline vapor hits the super heated cyl and ignites at the wrong time, etc....

I doubt that is what killed it.

I am fairly certain that is what happend to my 99 when it was shipped. Was on empty and the dealer generously put 2-3 gals (of gas?) into it. Fired up and got off the truck and then wouldnt start again. That was at 110k; took a while to straighten out leaky seals and shut off valve, etc but has been fine since. Is at 265k currently and going storng.

I have filled my dodge with gas and drove it home. It did not run right and made a lot of racket. but I drained the tank and put in diesel and it was fine.

On a 74 240d that I had some years back my lovely #3 daughter drove it to colombus oh to visit my lovely #1 daughter and filled it a half tank with gas.

Then proceeded to drive back to Lafayette. She made it to about Richmond indiana (90 miles). The engine was fried. scored cylinder walls....terminal damage....I found a good used 300d motor and upgraded it.

Believe me it can fry one if you drive it too far. Its not instantanious though and the warning sign is obvious.

She heard it protesting and asked the attendant at the self serve gas station if the car sounded right and he said "All diesels rattle".

Righto...
