I am considering purchasing my neighbor's farm truck and would be interested in opinions about its value. Here are the particulars:

1992 C3500 (edit: it's a K3500, not a C3500)
4WD
Manual transmission
454 V8
Current Va. inspection, but the rear tires are near the end.
90,000 miles (The owner is a wealthy doctor. He used the truck to haul his gooseneck trailer to fox hunting meets.)
Set up for gooseneck and tag-along trailer.
Needs a clutch
Body and interior are about what you would expect for a 17-year-old farm truck. Some rust through, driver's seat wore out, etc.
Otherwise, a solid truck.

He wants $2,000.

kbb.com says it's worth $2,900 if in "fair" condition.

I don't mind paying a few extra dollars because it is exactly what I need. Our farm truck died the other day and is not worth my time or money to get running again.

What's it worth?

How much are the parts for replacing the clutch?

If it didn't need a clutch, I'd say it was probably worth $2000-2500. Figure out what the clutch job will cost, subtract that, and you have your value.

What shape is the body and interior in? If they are decent, then value could be near $5000 after clutch is done. Clutch at a tranny shop should run you about 3-4 hundred. $2000 is a little high, but I know of many that would pay that amount...it does have the 454 in it and 90.000 miles is still rather low.

Buy it, throw some tires on it, and change the clutch out yourself (or pay a shade tree to do it) parts will cost under $200... Very simple to work on...

so for $2500-$3000 depending on how who does your clutch, you get a decent farm truck that's allready setup for towing, and you know the history of..

Good deal. The engine/transmission alone are worth $1000.00 at least. I sold my old beater 1976 Suburban farm truck for $750 on eBay to someone who wanted the 454 alone...

No matter what the flywheel surface looks like when you get the clutch out machine it. The extra $35 is money well spent and makes for a long lasting job.

I've gotten away without machining many flywheels. On a couple of them though, I did wish that I had done it once it was back together, and too late.

Agreed. I've always machined the flywheel. It's right there, and the extra time and money to get it machined is nothing compared to doing the whole job over again.

Yep, 2k is not a heck of a lot, when you consider what you will get out of it. Myself, I would rather have the old small block 350, but what the hey, you can probably sell the big block for about half of what the truck is costing in the first place. Good luck.

if it has an nv4500 trans and it should that alone is worth more then $1000.i just did the clutch in my 92 parts were right at 200.a few more things you want to do.the trans weighs probably 200 lbs so have help.you have to pull the boot off the floor and to get the shifter off there is a rounded cover over the pivot ball on the top of the trans.to get this little cover off you have to push down and turn counterclockwise about a 1/4 turn and then it will pop up.then you can pull the shifter.if you have a trans jack you can just pull the trans back and not drop it out completely.while it's out replace the pilot bearing with a bushing and replace the engine rear main seal.

also forgot to mention look on the back of the bellhousing right behind the clutch slave cyl for a grease zerk.and grease it.this is the pivot ball for the clutch fork.mine had all kinds of old grease built up and i didn't even know it had one til my pivot ball wore thru the clutch fork.

C3500 would indicate 4x2. K3500 is 4x4. Some years they just had numbers and no letters.

agreed. Its cheap to do and I regretted it the one time I did not....had to pull the trany and fw and get it done. Due to wear in the fw the clutch would not disengage fully.
