Our nation's behaviour toward the VietVets was deplorable and disgraceful. The guys today in Iraq & Afganistan have had the luxury of saying yes or no. The Vietnam guys didn't. They were just kids sent off to die at the behest of some ridiculous foreign policy. I have the utmost respect for you guys; it was just luck of the draw that I didn't go myself. And it's like Andy Rooney said on Sunday night: "they didn't give their lives; they were taken."

The USO does a good job, my mother who is now at Al-Asad sends USO produced DVD's to my kids with a book so she can read to my kids via DVD..pretty cool.

To those who remain on perpetual duty I cannot say enough about your sacrifice. It is through you that we remain free and whole. Enough has been said from left and right that we are in danger of loosing site of this sacrifice and the honor that you upheld. You are the rock that built this nation, your blood watered the tree of liberty and your spirit has kept us a free nation.

We as a nation must all come together today to honor the men and women who did not come back.

As I have said before, I just hope that we as a people can remain worthy of the sacrifice they have made and are still making.

X2 and more.

I brought my kids to their grandfathers grave today to plant flowers, marigolds, what he taught me to plant in the garden to keep away pests. A very practical man, and veteran of Korea and Viet Nam. My kids will grow up understanding the commitment and sometimes sacrifice that our veterans have made to insure our way of life. Pop was a master chief, and the single most important factor in my becoming a responsible father. My hat is off to all those who serve.

Thanks for adding your political spin to the thread...i wondered how long it was going to take. I truly hope you can sense the sarcasm in my words...

I don't see anything wrong with that post. But if someone does try to make this thread political I will delete the posts.

Today I explained to my 3 children (ages 9,12, and 14) what Memorial Day actually means, as I do every year. I hope it is starting to sink in. Too many people think of Memorial Day as just another 3 day weekend. I am humbled by those who served and payed the ultimate price for freedom. May we never forget.-Scott

I didn't read anything political in that post. I served in Viet Nam and what Rooney said was very much the truth.

Perhaps our backgrounds are not the same. My family members volunteered to go out of duty...they were not drafted. Those that paid the ultimate price gave their lives in service to our country...their lives were not taken by the government.

The message does not mean that any government takes the lives of its soldiers, but the enemy indivdual who does the killing. And drafted or enlisted, nobody goes to war wanting to die; hence, nobody is "giving" his life. This is merely a fluff expression meant to soften the blow to the loved ones of a soldier killed in action.
