Memorial Day

These heroes are dead. They died for liberty - they died for us. They are at rest. They sleep in the land they made free, under the flag they rendered stainless, under the solemn pines, the sad hemlocks, the tearful willows, and the embracing vines. They sleep beneath the shadows of the clouds, careless alike of sunshine or of storm, each in the windowless Place of Rest. Earth may run red with other wars - they are at peace. In the midst of battle, in the roar of conflict, they found the serenity of death. I have one sentiment for soldiers living and dead: cheers for the living; tears for the dead. ~Robert G. Ingersoll

Give a moment of silence for our dead, and a hand shake and salute for the living...

We're going to the Memorial Day parade, obviously even though my kids are young they have great respect for our Veterans so we are taking a friend who is a battlefield commissioned officer in Vietnam who worked as a Medivac crewman and earned 2 Bronze Stars and 3 Air Medals....God Bless the Medics! HOOAH!

Thank him for me...My dad was awarded 2 bronze stars, one with the mustard stain (Operation Junction City in Vietnam, E5 383QM). This is the first year that I won't be with him to take him to the VA cemetery. I have taken him every year for the last 18 years.

It's actually very gratifying to see this kind of posting. I can remember when I was spat on while wearing my uniform at Detroit airport in the very early 1970s during Vietnam. Things have gotten better, obviously.

To you guys who served and came back I have the utmost respect for you. I tip my hat to your bravery and dedication to this country.

To those who remain on perpetual duty I cannot say enough about your sacrifice. It is through you that we remain free and whole. Enough has been said from left and right that we are in danger of loosing site of this sacrifice and the honor that you upheld. You are the rock that built this nation, your blood watered the tree of liberty and your spirit has kept us a free nation.

We as a nation must all come together today to honor the men and women who did not come back.

As I have said before, I just hope that we as a people can remain worthy of the sacrifice they have made and are still making.

And thank god for that, I'm sorry you had to go through that indignity. Luckily most of the world has been pro-veteran since I got out.

I read 'Faces of the Fallen' in the Washington Post today, which listed the service men and women who died in Afghanistan and Iraq since the beginning of the year. Even though they hired on and understood the risks, they still paid the ultimate price. I have nothing but respect and thanks for them.

I would have gladly taken him for you. I come from a long line of war veterans myself.

A lot of the country singers do a lot for the vets. Kid Rock does the USO a lot.
