there are some folks out there
A buddy was into real high end audio in college and just after. He has a custom made "Oracle" turntable that was about $5K in the early 80's if I remember correctly. Air to isolate the base and air bearings for the arm.
He had 2 x 1000 watt amps driving 6' tall magnaplanar electrostatic speakers among other crazy stuff. I guess this can get right up there with the boat discussion on expensive hobbies. |

I used to have a pair of Maggies years ago and still own a pr of Acoustats, a true high voltage electrostatic. Nothing can come close close to the sound of the Acoustats as the moving film is near massless. Maggies have the added weight of aluminum wire which delaminates from the diaphragm over time. Both are very nice sounding dipole, planer speakers. |

A turntable is just a motor. The money should be in the cartridge, this guy has a junk cartridge compared to the platter.

I have Maggies myself. Right now I'm just running 1.6 QR's with a 250 watt Classe amp. There's no substitute however for big Maggies running a ton of juice. I used to have these 3.6's driven through VTL MB-450's and they were sweet! Dedicated listening room and all. Had to sell them to make way for the piano.

dbc peaks.
The old MGIIs had a problem with the aluminum wire corroding at the copper rivits with time. I had a pr I listened to for three months, put them away in the closet and found the HF open three years later. I had my share... McIntosh C22 preamp, Quad ESLs, maggies... |

I have two of the toughest TTs built ever, that is the Technics SL1200 Mk-II, till today they play all kinds of records including heavily warped ones with no complaint. All my 78rpm is handled nicely as well. Paid far less than my disappointing expensive German made DUAL and have outlasted it by a huge margin.
About Magnepans, they are the only US made speakers I would ever own, I have a huge weak spot for them. Far better value, sound and performance than so called expensive Martin Logans.

Looks like a decent enough table, but not nearly worth the shipping price, let alone that opening bid (if you ask me). Best in the world? Not even close. There are some silly-expensive (and very nice sounding) tables out there; this isn't even JV in comparison to the big boys.
