Unhappy The Hangover ... w111 cabriolets ruined

... haven't seen it, but The Hangover features prominently a nice w111 cabriolet. Apparently the filmmakers collected five w111 cabrios and destroyed all to create the overall destruction of the car in the movie. Maybe I'm a bad sport, but does that annoy anyone else? Even if the cars had bad engines or whatnot, they looked nice enough to pose as a mint car in the movie ... it's not the most common model, it's not like there's five of them in every junkyard, so I hate to see five of them totaled for $^&#s and giggles. It does kind of look like a funny movie. But would it have been that hard to use a bit of special effects?

especially for such a horrible movie.

That would be a shame. W111 cabrios are incredibly rare and still expensive even for non-mint examples. I've seen mint or restored ones sell for well over $100,000

http://www.copleymotorcars.com/recent_sales5_15.1vo1212.html

Normally when good cars are destroyed in movies they take a cheap car and only make it look like they destroy the nice model (The Ferrari in The Rock and the 7 series in The Transporter for example)

If what you say is true then i'm NEVER going to watch that movie. And if its not true, I still won't watch it knowing that a W111 gets trashed...

It will ruin the movie for me I'm sure. I also saw the preview and was laughing until I saw it get sideswiped.

Well, what I read may have been misinformed. It's possible they could have bought one nice one and four similar-looking cars to cover the various angles of destruction. It seems to me like that would be a lot cheaper and less wasteful. I can't find the article now, but it said they bought five identical cars and smashed them up from various angles. It does say on imdb that one of the banged up cars got stolen, and they found it sitting in traffic a day later ... maybe it was some brave soul trying to rescue it.
Even if they didn't really destroy them, I don't really understand why movies think it's so funny to destroy "rich guy" cars. It's a little ... tired. You can see it coming every time someone borrows his dad's Porsche or whatever. Oh gee, I wonder if it's going to get totaled.
I can't decide whether the movie what be otherwise stupid or hilarious. I lot of times I enjoy outrageous comedies like that, but sometimes they just miss the target. This one could go either way.

I saw that too, I almost screamed when I saw the preview! That is indeed a rare and beautiful car....if they really destroyed it they should all be shot. I mean a beat up W123 or whatever is one thing.....but a rare collectors car like that! What are they thinking?!

Yeah, I probably would have been sad if they'd killed a w123, but honestly, there are oodles of 123s sitting around in junkyards that are going in the crusher anyway ... heck, being destroyed in a movie might kind of give them an exciting encore before going in the crusher. But there are a lot of people who would love to have a treasure like a 111 cabriolet. Even one in shabby condition would be well worth restoring!

to be fair, not all writers, producers and directors fall into the "make a movie at any cost" category but there are some that do. jets, cars, buses, people, doesn't matter if they get trashed as long as the writers and directors get what THEY want. apparently wrecking things must have some sordid appeal to the public, else the movie would never sell....

It works, but only when things that aren't nice are involved....

I would go see a a science fiction movie where in the future all vehicles are Pontiac Azteks, and there is a Bullitt-style chase scene that would involve the destuction of several of those vehicles for the stunt!!!
