What does everyone think about a $4500 gas guzzler rebate

Anyone actually going to trade any old cars?
The way I read the bill if your car gets less than 18 MPG and you purchase a car or truck that gets more than 22 MPG (which is not much improvement) you get $3500.
If you buy a car that gets 10 MPG better than your trade you get $4500.00 Paid by the Government to the dealer. Dealer is in turn responsible for disposing the vehicles.

If $4,500 was stopping you from buying a new car before, you shouldn't be buying a new car. The only person I would recommend this program to would be someone who happens to have an extra crap car lying around that they've just been too lazy to get rid of (since it's not really worth the effort for $1,000).

My advice to someone who's daily driver is a crappy guzzler worth $1,500 would be to sell it for that and search for a good deal on a solid used car that gets good mileage.

But then, since apparently the big goal in America is to get everyone more in debt than they already are, I guess the whole thing is a fabulous idea.

I doubt the average older MB owner will go for this, unless the car is beat.

Brings me to a question though: What will happen to all the parts on the cars? I'm sure some of them won't have a single useful part on them, but a lot will ... for example if some MBs end up getting dumped through this farce. The wastefulness of this policy makes me queasy. I guess I'm just of the mindset that you don't just throw something away when its service is no longer needed. Its service may be of use to someone else, or its parts. If it's useless in all ways it will end up in the crusher anyway, and that's fine. Am I being overly optimistic to wonder if some of the parts on the clunkers turned in will be salvaged?

Throw it all away, America. I love it.

Depends on if they crush them or store them in a junkyard.....I'd prefer the later, at least then they can be found. Remember this tear jerker?

WE are the last of a dying breed Bodhi- I was raised by people who survivied the Depression and you recycled until it had holes in it or passed it on to someone who needed it. Today if it doesn't smell new it's in the trash pile!

Crushing typically means recycling. So to say that these old guzzlers are being thrown away isn't accurate.

If I remember correctly the deal only applies to vehicles that get 18 mpg or less. Not many Benzes will qualify for that, and those that do are probably junkers already anyway. I highly doubt a lot of nice old Benzes will get crushed because of this.

This will cause a great deal of hardship here in Texas. With the demise of the 1980's era Suburbans, it will be difficult to find a vehicle that gets 22 mpg that one can pack 25 Mexicans into.

Fueleconomy.gov shows the combined EPA MPG as 19.
If that's the number that would be used for "clunker" determination, then it wouldn't make the cut; too fuel-thrifty.

This website, http://www.fueleconomy.gov/FEG/noframes/2017.shtml shows 16 City, 20 Highway, 18 Combined.
