Kodachrome will soon be gone

I read this this afternoon. How sad. It's hard to see things you grew up with fading into oblivion. I always loved Kodachrome. In another generation, kids won't understand what paul Simon's song was about.

I've lived through the demise of Panatomic-X and photo paper that used to be resin free and needed a ferrotyping plate to get "glossy" prints. Think of all those medium and large format cameras that had Polaroid backs.

I hope that somewhere, there'll still be some people willing to roll up some film, spend some time under safelights and watch the magic of an image coming up through the tray of Dektol.

when i started at ithaca college in 1999, we had two HUGE darkrooms with about 50 enlargers each, plus a hallway with 8 to 10 color enlarger rooms on the other side of the whole darkroom "compound." in 2004, a year after i graduated, i went back to hang out with some of the repair men and facilities guys who worked in the basement fixing everything in the darkroom, and they gave me a tour of the re-done rooms. they now sit full of apple computers with digital negative scanners and massive printers. no trays of chemicals, no amber safe lights, no constant, soothing running water. just flourescent lights, iPods, and computer screens. it kills me.

but even i did it, tore up my darkroom, sold it on craigslist, and bought a digital scanner and downloaded adobe photoshop. wegmans, our local gi-normous grocery store, doesn't even develop film or make prints anymore.

i spent years down in that darkroom, eating dinner out of a vending machine, listening to obnoxious punk and metal, making out with my college girlfriend, meeting all kinds of people i never would have met and had to talk to otherwise. and that wonderful dektol smell and dried white fixer stains.

sigh.....

I took a photo developing class in high school, now I did but its out dated knowledge now.

Now I just keep my pictures on memory cards, cheaper than developing them.

wow. talk about feeling old.

high school, 1979 and 1980, pan-x and plus-x, pinhole cameras, dodging and burning and racking, high contrast film, etc.

(of course, i have been told all that stuff was highly toxic; all i remember is weird, hard to explain brown stains on my fingers. )

Ha ha, "Rodinal" that brings back some good memories; thought it vanished together with AGFA. 1:25 or 1:50, if you did it right it was absolute brilliant with Tri-X.

I haven't gotten rid of my darkroom yet, but it sits unused, just collecting dust now. I had hoped one of my daughters would take an interest in it. I guess I'll get rid of it. It's going to be hard to let go of, though.

Some of the happiest times of my life were spent in darkrooms. There were also a lot of happy moments spent in dark rooms . . . . wif wimen.

I can say that I had the pleasure of taking my own shots, processing my own film, and then process my own images.. Its awesome the first time you do it. Seeing your image come to life in the developer.

That's the magic that hooks people on doing their own printing in the darkroom! I'm glad you got to experience it.

Exactly! I used to do lots of Tri-X and even attempted Kodacolor a few times.

Process C-41 forever!

I see that Kodak is still going to make slide film, just a different type and not at 64 ASA any longer.

Anybody remember VR-G 1000? That film was awesome. I could take great pictures under the darkest conditions.

Oh and I love this from their site:

KODAK PROFESSIONAL BW400CN Film
Get black and white prints with the convenience of color.
Enjoy the creativity and power of black and white images with the convenience of color film processing. PROFESSIONAL BW400CN

Oh come on...

I just might have to set up a darkroom again. Shoot some
Tri-X 400 before they discontinue that film...

I love using my 40-50 year old 35mm Soviet Leica rip off rangefinders and my 1980's vintage Minolta and Nikon SLRs. I also have older cameras that take 120 film - nothing beats film not even the best digitals out there. I have a postwar Zeiss Ikon 120 bellows camera that will beat anything out there if you set it up correctly.
