Thoughts on selling a car.

You just can't beat, up close and personal,,,, usually. I recently sold our 2 124's,,, my wifes' 93 400E, and my 95 E320 staion wagon. I put them both on the Shop Forum "Cars for Sale". and on Craigslist. The 400E went fairly quick and was sold to a shop forum member and his first comment was " I thought it would be nice, but didn't think it would be THAT nice". The E320 got a lot of interest, but no real action,,, and it was a beautiful, well maintained car. It sold to a person driving by our shop who saw it for sale out front, and stopped,,,, looked,, and took it for a drive. That is all it took. What I am trying to say is, if you have a good machine, at a decent price, you NEED to have someone actually see, touch, and drive it, and the deal will be done. There are so many grey areas online, and most are well deserved, that the up close and personal is very hard to beat. JMHO. Pete

Agreed; the flip side to this is to never, never buy a car sight unseen. See before you pay.

Selling a car on this forum is very difficult.

I've had alot of success on Craigslist.

I wonder why....

Maybe its because a good deal of the people on this forum are very critical of what other people are trying to sell.... I can find at least 3 recent posts of a certain member being critical of someone elses ad.

It has nothing to do with being critical, we're a frugal, cheap bunch. When someone makes a bonehead ad without critical details, exaggerations/deception, and a ridiculous price, forum members can set it straight to save someone from making a bad purchase.

I give just as many compliments as critical comments.

BINGO. I sold my 400E this weekend and never even considered putting it up on here, because I did not want to deal with the nit-picking, carping, and *****ing.

"You really ought to ____..."
"Your price is too high."
"The fuel filler door is mis-aligned."
"It's a 300D, not a 300D-T."

Folks need to realize that there won't be too many cars, let alone nice cars, offered for sale on this forum if this continues.

I still think the FS forum needs a "no dumping" rule. If you're not interesting in buying the car that's posted for sale, move on, there's no reason to post.

Very true. Seems like everybody on this forum is able to pick up mint examples of classic Mercedes for under a grand, and anybody who thinks a car might be worth more than that is percieved as a nutjob. I think the forum members opinions on the vehicles themselves are valuable, especially for new buyers, but their thoughts on price are worthless.

You are exaggerating quite a bit. Think about it from the buyers side. This "dumping" as you call it could save someone from making a horrible purchase. For those of you who get bent out of shape with DT and TDT crap, grow up. Its just some harmless fun.

Even I have been a victim of this "dumping" but it saved me from selling wheels I did not accurately describe to someone who took my work for it. This was an unintentional mistake, but there are many more who deceive intentionally

FS: AMG Pentas 16x8 With nearly new Tires

I do think listing a car here takes a lot more effort and rarely yields a sale, but at least we don't let people get away with the same old crap that you see on CL. The one's I really like to go after are the dealers or private sellers whose first post here is to dump their car, usually twice what its worth. That may be considered "dumping" but I enjoy it.

Sorry I don't see it as "dumping". If you post something for a crazy price or with stupid info or just plain lies. And we all have seen them. Then they should expect people to say something. If we hold ourselves as a great Mercedes forum. Then the honesty in the FS section should reflect that. And just think if someone new should wander through the FS section not knowing anybetter...they buy some hideously overpriced car with X,Y,Z wrong with it. When it would have taken someone on the forum 2 minutes to post "you are crazy trying to sell that car because X,Y,Z is wrong with it".

Selling a car here is a PITA. Everyone nit picks it.

Ebay or local is my favorite way of dumping a car.

That has already been stated at least once, by an intervening forum moderator on a FS thread recently, where the negative comments, although perhaps true from the writer's perspective, were getting out-of-hand. Still, the dumping continues to some degree on FS threads. I now avoid making candid negative comments on FS threads, because of the request made by the moderator.

However, when it comes to threads requesting; "What do you think of this car for this price?" -That is the type of thread to be totally candid, regardless how others may think about one's comments. Being truthful, as in; "what would I pay for this," deserve the truth from the member's perspective. -Regardless of what another forum member thinks....

I disagree.

Here's an example, 180 degrees in reverse;

I saw Tyler860's post two days ago for his now sold '91 350SDL, for "$1,800.00 / OBO." Now I totally think he could have gotten a far higher price for it, (I'm certain I could have) regardless of what he may think. Should I have posted that he was leaving a grand or more on the table - after all, that is what I truly believed at the time I read his post? I think not. You cannot protect one from themselves, is how I look at it. -Besides.....I don't think it's any of my business what he asks and sells a car for. It certainly isn't anyone else's business either. And as I recall, Tyler did not post asking anyone's advice on pricing it. The same goes for any FS ad too, is how I see it.
