HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

To everybody

Have a great 4th of July and a good weekend. Take some time to reflect how things would have been if the Continentals had lost the war or had not had the guts to go against the world's number 1 superpower at the time.
Also think about how out of all the revolutions that have happened in the world, ours can be considered one of two that succeeded. The other being the Glorious Revolution in England (not the Cromwell one, but the throwing out the Stewarts for the last time one )

All other revolutions have been more along the lines of the French with reigns of terror followed by a government that was not what the people expected (see the IRof Iran as an example or Soviet Russia for another)

We here are truly blessed to be in a nation that is still the freest place on earth where one's dreams can still come true.

Forget for a moment the Sarah Palins, Obamunists, healthcare, cap and trade, etc just think how lucky we are that this nation, this experiment of government by the people actually happened and that it has survived to this day.

We could be living in a very different world right now. Thank our Founding Fathers (or the dead white dudes on the cash) for being as enlightend and as wise as they were.

Again, Happy 4th of July. Celebrate our Indepence, not from King George, but from all tyranny. Most of all be safe - you need your fingers to work on your MB

There are other revolutions that worked quite well. The Velvet Revolution comes to mind and no one even died (other than a couple of suicides I think).

I'd say the US is ONE of the freest countries, but there are others offering similar if not even greater freedoms. Sorry to rain on your parade, I'm just allergic to nationalistic exaggerations and distortions. I acquired that allergy growing up behind the Iron Curtain listening to similar BS. Certainly the US is currently the longest-lived democracy, even if not the first. That alone is impressive enough to me and no exaggerations are needed.

Happy 4th of July!

I highly recomend reading up on the revolution when you get a chance. What our soliders went through would have made the vietcong cring.

I find it amazing that we were able to beat the very well fed, trained, and equiped British forces on the field of battle. Our soliders were usualy mostly naked, sick, and hadn't eaten in 3-4 days, with only a handfull of powder and ball. Since they usualy lacked shoes in the winter the army could be tracked by the trail of blood their feet left...

Happy Independence day! Thanks to their sacrifice we can say that.

I went to Valley Forge a couple months ago. The conditions there were so bad that I am surprised anybody survived much less was fit to fight. The Congress had no credit, there was no food, uniforms were non existent and the ammunition was mostly captured stuff from the British. I also toured the British encampments in Monmouth, NJ and the difference was night and day. The idea that these poor bastards could stay together and actually defeat the best trained and equipped army in the world is an amazing testimony to their strength.

Again, if they had disbanded and lost the revolution the world would be a completely different place today. For one thing most of US would not be here. I cannot see a bunch of Germans, Italians, Russians, etc going to a British possession...

I also find it amazing that the north Vietnamese were able to repel the US invasion of their country. But I think the answer lies in the fact that the defending army that is fighting on its own turf is more determined to do whatever it takes to prevail, whereas the invading army is constantly evaluating whether the mission is worth the blood and treasure being expended, and also needs to be more concerned with logistics. I'm pretty sure the British could have prevented or at least delayed the existence of the USA if they had really wanted to, it's just that they probably had other priorities after finding the American resistance tougher than expected.

I think the USA would have eventually become an independent country anyway, much like Canada. The place might be a little different, maybe a little less gun & religion obsessed, but I don't think it would be all that different.

Or the USA would have been absorbed onto Canada. Florida would still be Spanish, Louisiana would be French and everything West of that would be Mexican. The Latin American revolutions probably would not have happened nor would the French. Imagine a modern world where the three superpowers are Great Britain, Bourbon France and Bourbon Spain...
