Hmmm, you seem to be developing a conscience, and feeling empathy for people ?

I am glad to see that.

As a child, we lived virtually the same way for 4 years...in a 13' travel trailer. We had one Christmas where we didn't have money for gifts, so dad made everything we had. We were a much closer family back then, and I cherish the memories I have of that time.

This was during the recession in the early 1980's. Did my dad go to Uncle Sam and demand that we be given a home? No. He pulled himself up by his bootstraps and planted a rather large garden. We cleared the land in southern Ohio and later built a cabin. We didn't have running water at all, and was without electricity for 2 of those years. We started raising chicken to sell, then were able to afford hogs and calves for family consumption. We learned to live off the land and hunt for meat as well. We were survivors, and I thank my dad quite often for showing us how to really live.

I think this is a great opportunity for families to spend time together and re-connect with each other. It's a great time to be a family and build wonderful memories for your children.

I hope your mom and dad are still alive and you've had the chance to tell them that.

BTW, is the "cabin" still standing? Have you even wanted to go back and see if it was? I'm actually trying to get back to every place I've lived over the years and get pictures of areas and even the homes, if they still exist (Two have been "mowed down" due to RE development. Even the roads are gone...) One place, where I worked, was completely bulldozed and the area is now a city park...talk about urban improvement...

Yes, he's turning into a great big softie. Send him an email with your full name and street address, as he wants to gift you that share of Berkshire/Hathaway stock that he's always barking about.

Just don't expect an on-forum response, as apparently he has been inappropriate one time too many...

Hey, my favorite charities could do a lot with that money.

Maybe even help the people that were in the origional post.

I wonder if he was truly interested in their plight or if he was setting up
yet another political attack ?

Guess we wont know for at least 6 months.

A series of forum transgressions, culminating in a Diesel Discussion-baiting critique of the styling of the entire w123 station wagon line.

He would have stood a better chance of escaping censure had he sauntered into the Simon Wiesenthal Center dressed as Hermann Goering...

It warms the cockles of my cold heart to see you're still around - and I'm giggling @ the w123 critique. Is that more egregious that calling Larry Bible an ass or punching a Rudolf Diesel descendant in the nads?

but yes - skid and his 'couple three' million of sagely invested glory have apparently been unseated. His status as a permanent e-legend has taken a serious, 2009 BRK.A-type loss.

Who is going to make me feel bad for having health insurance now?

"And this is supposed to be the best country in the world. It is not even able to take care of its own citizen but keeps on giving lessons and advice to other country.
Sorry , but America is going down the drain at high speed.
the economic crisis is all over the world but so far in Europe you don't see people in the streets because they lost their home.
Any legislator feeling guilty when reading this article ?certainly not most of the politicians are too busy passing laws about guns , dogs in restaurant . ."

You know, I don't see too many under-nourished folks in these pics of the Sacramento Tent City. Catch the heavy set chic smoking cigarettes.

I have sympathy for those needing and looking for a helping hand. I have little for those looking for a handout who are capable of gainful employment.

We could adopt the European model. You know, housing is a right, like health care. Give all homeless some form of housing.

Norway's approach.
ATTITUDE TOWARDS PEOPLE WHO ARE
HOMELESS
Since 2001 the focus on homelessness has developed
from almost none to a political issue. The vision
‘Good, safe housing for all’ was introduced in the
White Paper of Housing Policy in 2003. The attitude
has changed from obligation of behaviour to deserve
housing, to housing as a human right, stating that you
will have an offer of housing even if you:
• are poor
• have a drug or alcohol dependency
• do not want to receive treatment
• are not free from symptoms
("Can you spell NIMBY")

I'm surprised I haven't heard the term "Bushvilles" yet.

That sums it up nicely!

Don't mess with the W123 on the diesel forum, just don't...

Pretty much sums up the attitude here. People expect the country to take care of them. Somebody has to take care of them because of this, that or the other. Somebody has to wipe their butts and tuck them into bed at night. What, if you don't mind my asking, would they do? For their own welfare, that is.

Notice we don't give lessons to places that have no effect on our situation? Just because we call it advice doesn't mean it isn't an attempt to mold them into something that is beneficial to us.

Why? When times are hard, it weeds out those that cannot survive because they are not fit. That leaves the strong around and removes the weak.
