No product is ever perfect.... Doesn't matter if you're talking about software, music, shoes, cars, duct tape, shampoo, magazines.... Whatever. Just as "I'm broke 'cause I spend all my money on beer" doesn't justify stealing, neither does "well, it's not perfect"!!! If your attitude and outlook is representative of the upcoming generation's sentiments.... then I feel sorry for you all, because the world does NOT work that way... Your "adjustable morals" when it comes to stealing are going to cause you nothing but trouble in life. |
So, music and video should be free, so what should be paid for, and by who?

Ok.. you convinced me.. I'll stop downloading stuff. So you guys never taped movies for your buddies without the expressed written consent of the network(in the VHS days) or burn music for your friends? 'Cause I do that all the time, thieving bastard that I am. |
I buy music that I really like. Most of todays stuff sucks anyways, so they music I buy usually comes from Dimple or a swap meet.
I am happy paying $2.99 for a CD when I only like one of the songs on the disc. I am not happy paying $12.99 for a CD where I only really like one of the songs on the whole disc. BTW - There is always newsgroups. I stopped using P2P networks a long time ago. Too much garbage on there. |
Thank you Ara T. for the b-day well-wishes... :thumbup1:
Hey folks...don't get me wrong...musicians should get paid for their work. How it use to work was... Buy an album, play it...simple as that. Then along came home recorders...first it was wire, then tape, then VHS, CD, DVD...and on and on and ....... I spent the money, one time (yah...right!) on a HEART(edit) album...I believe it was Butterfly, and that purchase was based on just ONE SONG...I think it was Straight On For You (or something like that), and I MISTAKENLY THOUGHT that the rest of the album was going to be like that song... WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, AND F***ING $14.00 WRONG! What a piece of wasted vinyl that package was... To me...HEART(edit) owed me a night out on the town AND a backstage pass for the refund deal...that album sucked the life and money out of my wallet... Now, do I hold some sort of grudge against the recording industry, as a whole? Maybe... But what getS me, to this day, is this... It's not the idea that we go out and buy the latest and greatest software, music-ware or any-ware that the hawkers of the shiney stuff show us...it's as if we're allowed to use the stuff JUST ONCE and then...it's obsolete. It's as if we're suppose to pull out a quarter and plug the box at the head of the bed for a few more minutes of vibrations... We're not allowed to OWN anything anymore...if I want to listen to my favorite tune, I need to either keep up with the Jones and the Dows and buy the next box to play my golden oldies and keep my stored portfolios of pictures available at my fingertips or I have to do without 'cause I'm not current with the latest version of software that I'm finding out is not backwards-compatible with anything more than 2-generations removed from the current version that I already paid for and WAS working properly...until NOW????? WTFF????!!!!!????? Right now, I'm involved in a computer "inventory" to make sure a sales-software upgrade that we didn't know about until 2 weeks ago, will actually play on any of the laptops/desktops that we have right now...we, apparently, need dual-core processors and a minimum of 2GB of RAM along with a CPU speed of 2GHz. - minimum. All of this and we're still operating with equipment that should have been thrown out 5 years ago and upgraded 'cause our competition already has the 2nd gen. of what I'm trying to get the company to buy for us NOW...instead, the software monster gets another appetizer at the expense of salary/pay increases and equipment upgrades... Recently, we had a radio-station pirate in the area...pretty serious stuff...the guy was actually interferring with another legit-licensed FM station on an adjacent channel and was blanking that FM out for about a 10-15 mile radius... I contacted a friend of mine at the FCC...they had issues with their own funding so they couldn't send a truck to our area...so I then contacted another "source" I had with the local FBI...they informed my that they were aware of what was happening and sympathized, but due to their "constraints" - they couldn't help out... But, when I informed them that a certain website that the "station" referred to as being a "supporter" of the station was a site that would take Dishnet/DirecTV Access cards and reprogram them...the FBI took my information and within a few days...not only was the website "gone" - so was the pirate radio station. So...some illegal activity is not condoned and still others are ignored... Just be aware...waving the flag of free-choice doesn't neccessarily mean everyone disagrees with the practice...it's just that it may not be profitable enough to either manage properly or it could mean a knock on your door early in the morning and you getting rousted out of bed in your underwear... Me? I don't look THAT GOOD in my underwear and I hope to keep anyone else from having to make that kind of statement as a matter of undeniable fact. :o ;)  |

The latest thing with software is limited number of installs. Limited number of installs! You can only install it a certain amount of times on a machine before you have a coffee mug coaster. Ridiculous. |

Let’s drop the humorous one-liners here and go back and take a look at posts 31 and 34. You started of with a nice birthday wish. Good job, there. From that point on though, you did little beyond making yourself look like an immature, self serving little brat. I’d sub out the “little brat” with something perhaps more accurate like: “flip’n idiot”, but that might not be looked upon by the mods too well. I’m 100% with Mike on this one. Your "adjustable morals" when it comes to stealing (and I’m sure that’s not all) are going to cause you nothing but trouble in life. So...At this point you and I are pretty much done here. You go back to your own little "I'm perfect" world where nothing matters except what makes you happy. Screw having any level of morals or personal principles to live by. Keep screwing the rest of the system and justifying it as ok because you say it is. And perhaps one day, when you grow up… Well…. We’ll stop there and see if you make it that far first, before we waste any more time on this topic. |
Unauthorized downloading of music is not stealing, regardless of how many times the uneducated make the claim. It's copyright infringement, and there's a reason for the distinction.
If you disagree with the above, you would rather have your $10,000 car stolen, than have $20,000 in unauthorized digital downloads shared in a P2P environment - likely by people who would never purchase them legitimately, even if no "free" option existed. |

As soon as you espouse such policies for the music industry, I'll accept your argument. Until then...you can't have it both ways. You compare copyright infringement to theft of physical goods, and yet expect benefits that don't apply to the same items. |
