^^ How long did it take to change the constitution?
Hopefully not as long as it took to strike the Stars & Bars from the State House flagpole. |

Wow!
Hey Kerry, thanks; is this something that happened on this day August 7th in history or just simply something that you decide to post today, perhaps an epiphany of sorts? Just got back home from the Annual Solidarity with all Non-acknowledgers of God, Non-Protestants, and Atheists Paddlers Picnic? Or is it National Tell Everyone Something That Looks Bad About South Carolina Day again already, time does fly by!

Here are a few things that did happen on August 7th in years past: 1794 - President Washington issued a proclamation calling for those involved in the Whiskey Rebellion to return home. At the same time, he called for the militia to stop the rebellion. 1942 - The US landed forces on Guadalcanal during World War II. 1964 - Gulf of Tonkin resolution passes through Congress. |

Happened across a book in the local used bookstore called The American Constitutions and Religion published in the 1930's. It contains the various articles pertaining to religion in the charters and constitutions of the US beginning with the colonial period up thru the 1930's dividing the historical moments into four main eras, the colonial, the revolutionary war, 1837-1876 and 1876-1930. A quick perusal seems to have revealed that South Carolina was the most religious of the US states throughout that period. I think it was the only state with an established religion. To be recognized as part of that established religion, a congregation needed to be Protestant and created by at least 15 males.

Thanks for posting that, Kerry.
I have a new-found respect for the great state of North Carolina. Presbyterians are big into accountability.

Proof of God's Existence!?
I'm a deeply devout non-believer so offence taken or intended, just making sport of some pretty obscure facts appearing out of the blue!
It is interesting though that South Carolina has maintained that particular cultural predisposition over such a long time. "A quick perusal seems to have revealed that South Carolina was the most religious of the US states throughout that period." It would be my opinion that they carry the mantle still today as the most religious. I love the state, spent 4 years in the late 70's there in the service, have visited there many times, and will probably end up there a few years down the road. Having traveled throughout most of the US and most of the other continents as well, you would be hard pressed to find another place where people regularly meet you with a smile and a "How are you doing", I suppose my view may be a bit distorted having spent much the last 20 years living in the People's Republic of Taxachusetts. Up here a hearty New York FU or WTFDYW would be considered warm and friendly! I don't know I think liberalism predominantly concentrating on all that is bad and must be fixed doesn't necessarily lead to the most friendly and optimistic folks. Ironically perhaps, that book is almost like “manna from heaven” though! Enjoy! |

Quote:
"No person who shall deny the being of God, or the truth of the Christian religion , or the divine authority of the Old or New Testament , or who shall hold religious principles incompatible with the freedom or safety of the State, shall be capable of holding any office or place of trust or profit in the civil department within this State." Deleting a clause in the previous original article of the Constitution from 1776 which was: "or the truth of the Protestant religion' generously allowing non-Protestant christians to hold office.
