One of the better moves our school made was to implement a textbook rental system. Textbooks rental is by semester and included in the tuition and fee bill. Pick 'em up in August, turn 'em in in December.

It's a mix. I use my college's online bookstore to snarf up the ISBN. From there I go to a number of sites. Amazon, Abebooks, and ebay.

Sometimes half.com has what I am looking for. Most of the time it doesn't. International editions saved me a ton of cash freshmen year.

I wish I had a rental system. My most expensive book was Physics of Sound by Berg 3rd edition. Weighing in at a killer 74.75$. It's sad though, my college bookstore for the first time had it used for a little cheaper at $69.00 . It's a condensed version for the class that chops off a couple of chapters at the end that aren't needed. My calc class did that last year and I had 5 extra chapters on a larger book that I got for less then what the bookstore wanted for the abridged version!

That's a good deal. www.alibris.com can be a good resource.

my first semester at ithaca college was the worst, $300 and then some total. it put a sour taste in my mouth that lasted my whole four years. and then when textbook buy back came around at the end of the semester, the buy back total was so low i threw up in my mouth a little...

does this mean you're in ithaca? you should bring your benz over by the hippie store where i work! i'd love to meet another mercedes lover who doesn't just poor WVO in the damn tank and ruin their fine german luxury car.

Sorry bud two more weeks I'll be there on the 24th so plan on something that day after I move into Terraces! I actually won't be able to make the gtg in Montgomery since I was alerted to the fact I have to be in Pittsburgh that day . What store do you work in?

Have you heard anything about the new Terrace 13? The school got a wonderful deal on FEMA trailers to put the 500 or so over enrolled freshmen into it! In all seriousness it's just some double wides they put up. No insulation and poor heating/cooling. 46 grand for that crap.

They tried bribing me with the prospect of cash for living off campus. I'm seriously considing it at this point. I'm browsing some apartments, but this whole experiance is a little too much for me

But that breaks the insane textbook academic complex, but its also a very good idea!

My school decided that it would be a good idea to provide the books as a charge to the tuition, therefore eliminating any possibility of getting the books at anything but absolutely sky high prices. And forget about sharing or choosing to get an alternate edition!! You'd think paying $50k a year would be enough for their liking...good thing I got out before they applied it, doesn't go for grad courses.

I'm averaging $300-$600 for books per semester.

SCSU loves using new editions and professor written books that they only sell in their book stores.

Since this is my last semester I'm going to wait and see which books I actualy need. I'll buy them when I'm forced to. I'm tired of spending $140 on a book and using it once, no thanks.

Hatters, are you near Wilton? I have a goofy friend that lives there.

That seriously stinks. I would DEFINITELY try www.abebooks.com . That website has an option for international editions which saved me an incredible amount of money. International editions are nothing more then black and white copies with the same numbering and maybe some chinese on the copyright page. That's all it is!

I'm trying my best to see if I can avoid taking this gereontology class so I can take this government and media class I'm required to take!

Edit: A quick search on Google shows you're near New Haven which is kinda close to wilton :-p All of those professors probably work at Yale and supplement their tenured careers with book sales.

Yeah I'm not that far from Wilton.

Yale is a neat place my friend goes their, Yale is in its own little world.

I go to SCSU which is a far more affordable state school. I just cut them a $4400 check for my last semester, I figure $5k with books.

Thanks for the advise. I just picked up a text book for my daughter for $40 that was $70 everywhere else.
